The children suffering under Israel’s onslaught – BBC News

Published

on

A senior United Nations official has said the human tragedy unfolding in Gaza is “unbearable”. Philippe Lazzarini told the UN Security Council that nearly 70% of those being killed by the Israeli bombardment in Gaza are women and children.

Israel launched its attack on Gaza after Hamas gunmen raided southern Israel in October, killing 1,400 people and taking more than 200 hostage. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to destroy Hamas, which many western governments describe as a terrorist organisation.

The United Nations has heard demands for a ceasefire from many nations who say the mass killing of civilians in Gaza is unacceptable. The head of the UN has said that Israel is breaching international law.

The charity Save the Children reports that nearly 3,200 children had been killed by Israeli attacks in Gaza in just three weeks.

Fergal Keane reports for News at Ten on the story of one family in Gaza.

@max_khanin "Hypocrite, look at how many Arabs have committed terrorist attacks against Israelis! You have no idea what's going on here, Muslim Arabs are occupying foreign countries."

Quit your whining, we know exactly what's going on here – you ZIonists started this, you done stole someone else's homeland. You could've setup your Jew-ish State in some unoccupied land, but you had NO RIGHT to take over Palestine against the will of the Palestinians. If you'd been cool about it the Palestinians would have welcomed you like they always did before you arrogant racist European ZIonists invaded.

It's just heartbreaking how israel kills innocent lifes, doesn't they realize some people have dreams? doesnt they realize that people in gaza are also humans? doesnt they realize how cruel are they? doesn't they realize killing kids for no reason is lame? doesnt they realize why they are even killing innocent lives and children?
it just makes me sad that how israel doesnt realize what they're doing?

If they are in Israel’s custody then they will at least LIVE! While I understand they may be temporarily uncomfortable but are SAFE (not tortured & possible die in near future!) vs staying where they are killed at war!! It is inevitable to be caught in the cross fire realistically. I can guarantee Israeli is not proud or happy of such a situation:( They will taste freedom eventually without Hamas leadership!!

Hamas is not concerned. They could have taken civilians into their tunnels and release the hostage. The BBC seems to forget that Hamas slaughtered 1400 people within an hour chopping babies head off. They can release the hostages, they can allow civilians evacuate to the South, but do they bother? They built they tunnels and headquarters under schools, hospitals and kindergartens to use civilians as shield. The BBC is glorifying "Hamas fighters".

Sir Keir Starmer is fighting to stay on as prime minister as the pressure mounts | BBC News

Published

on

Three members of his government, including Home Office minister Jess Phillips, have resigned, whilst scores of Labour MPs are calling for him to quit following a disastrous set of elections for the party last week.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among a number of cabinet ministers urging the prime minister to set out a departure timetable.

Sir Keir said he does not intend to quit and threw down the gauntlet to potential rivals to formally challenge him as Labour leader.

No MP has yet launched a formal bid to challenge him, which requires the backing of 81 colleagues or 20% of Labour MPs, according to party rules.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.
