Should trans athletes compete in female categories? – BBC Newsnight

Published

on

As cycling’s world governing body continues to mull eligibility of British rider Emily Bridges in women’s events, we explore the transgender issue confronting sport. Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog

Transgender women should compete in an “open category” in order to “protect women’s sport”, two current elite female runners tell the BBC.

The British athletes, one of whom is an Olympian, believe athletes should only be allowed to compete in the category of their biological sex.

As governing bodies struggle to find a way forward, trans athletes have faced criticism for competing at high levels in sport – even though they’ve met competition standards set by the discipline.

Is there an unfair advantage? Should transgender women be banned from competing in female categories? Should there be a separate category established? Or should sport be more inclusive?

BBC Sports Editor Dan Roan has been investigating the issue following several high profile recent cases that led to controversy and division.

Stop using false language against observable studied truth!
We know these adult males/men aren't adult females/women and they will never be!
I will not call any males: females: girls/women: she, her, etc…
This is how civilizations are destroyed by allowing society to pick their own poison and let them do and say whatever nonsense they make up!
What will hit next is the age, race, height, place of birth, accents, job titles, false education any and everything until what little rights you had are gone because you will no longer have observable realistic classifications and in return, The System will have its own set of rules for the new classifications!
Imagine if and when other civilizations are informed of this insanity they will have the hardest time trying to understand that your demise happened because you were given free rein to live in the land of make-believe and you actually thought it be rent-free!

If they want to have segregation in sports, those folks that believe they are woman , why those trans don’t compete with real men? why they like to compete only with women? Lets finish with this and let this trans woman compete with man , women always wanted to be treated equal like man in all sports , so there go trans woman lets compete with man not with your sisters

We as women are being called bigots, antitrans, when. THE MEN IN DRESSES actually HATE women. They want to wipe up out. They are the bigots and women haters.

  25. @vamonaa

    December 30, 2023 at 10:31 pm

why don't they draw a line on chromosomes? it's the easiest, and excludes the very small group of people born with a genetic defect or testosterone insensitivity

  26. @jhacksb1399

    December 30, 2023 at 10:31 pm

Additionally, trans have phuqued up parents.

  27. @jhacksb1399

    December 30, 2023 at 10:31 pm

Trans people deserve their own teams and leagues. Trans should be banned from girls sports. Let trans teams play against boys teams. What? That would not be fair! If they were either afraid to compete with boys or not athletic enough to do so, why would a team of trans want to lose to real boys all the time?

  28. @jhacksb1399

    December 30, 2023 at 10:31 pm

Are there any 6’ 5” black trans competing on high school girls basketball teams? Just imagine! His team would dominate. He’d be comparable to Shaquille O’Neal. Wow! There should be no segregation whether he’s a trans girl or a black trans girls. Come on man, Woke up.

No. Men should not compete in womens sports. Thats what they are. Men. What they were born and its what they will die as.

  31. @pyrtlemd1

    December 30, 2023 at 10:31 pm

Translated…"Should men be allowed to compete against women?" See how easy it is to make sense of an imbecilic question? Parents of female athletes and self-respecting women in general must deal with this insanity in a definitive way. When these sissy-boys start winning by default because the women won't race against them, it will become the new norm and the perverts will lose the spotlight. When they lose the spotlight, they will either put their big-boy jeans back on or they will seek the professional help they need.

    December 30, 2023 at 10:31 pm

We live in clowns world. The answer is simple, no men in women's sport.

  33. @bristolcorvid8894

    December 30, 2023 at 10:31 pm

No reason on earth to subject women and girls to this. These men are cheats.

These men have many biological differences to women, and there's no way around it.
They can compete with other men, and/or organize to play in a trans category.

Will "Lia" Thomas has a well-documented pattern of denigrating, mocking, and abusing women, both in the locker rooms as well on his social media account. Many others do the same. Men don't belong in women's prisons, either.

Fact: Anyone who agrees that it's okay for transwomen to compete against biological women is a misogynist.

Will the new cancer vaccine survive RFK Jr’s America? | BBC News

Published

on

A new personalised vaccine given in combination with a drug has stopped skin cancer returning in patients during a trial, representing a potentially watershed moment in cancer treatment. Scientists used mRNA technology, which was used for some Covid-19 vaccines.

But that technology – and vaccines more generally – have become increasingly controversial in the United States since the Covid-19 pandemic. The Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, is a vaccine sceptic.

In August 2025 cancelled $500m (£376m) in funding for mRNA vaccine research. The move impacted 22 projects being led by major pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer and Moderna, for vaccines against bird flu and other viruses, according to Kennedy’s department.

We speak to Tom Whipple, host of the BBC’s Inside Science programme, about the science of this new vaccine. And we ask how funding cuts for vaccine research could impact health outcomes not just for Americans, but for the world.

Historic first as Chinese robot beats Usain Bolt’s 100m world record at Beijing games | BBC News

Published

on

A Chinese humanoid robot has run 100 metres in 9.39 seconds in a preliminary heat at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, surpassing the men’s world record time held by Jamaican sprinting great Usain Bolt.

Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, won its heat at the opening of the games’ second edition. The robot overtook smartphone maker Honor’s Lightning near the finish after falling behind early in the race. Lightning finished in 9.47 seconds, also faster than the 9.58-second record Bolt set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin.

The results marked a remarkable improvement from last year’s inaugural games, when Tiangong Ultra won the 100 metres in 21.50 seconds. Tiangong also won the world’s first humanoid robot half-marathon, held in Beijing last year.

The 100 metres is among 51 events at the games, which include football, dancing and contests to complete industrial tasks.

China is promoting humanoid robots as a strategic emerging industry, with policymakers and companies betting that advances in AI and hardware will accelerate their use in manufacturing, logistics and consumer applications.

Investor enthusiasm for the sector was underscored recently when shares in Unitree, China’s best-known humanoid robot maker, jumped more than five fold in its Shanghai trading debut, giving the company a market value of about $50 billion.

This year’s games have drawn 2,056 robots from 666 teams across 16 countries and six continents, up from 280 teams at the inaugural event.
