How are Britain’s cold homes impacting health? – BBC Newsnight
When it’s bitterly cold in Britain more people die, and much of those deaths are preventable. Indeed, experts point out that far colder countries have fewer excess winter deaths.
The UK has some of the least energy efficient homes in Western Europe – many are old and less able to keep heat in.
There’s never been more public money going into helping the nation pay its energy bills, but it still costs more than ever to heat your home which many still can’t afford to do, and in doing so they risk their health and that of their family.
Newsnight’s Science and Technology Correspondent Kate Lamble reports on how our housing is hitting our health.

A new personalised vaccine given in combination with a drug has stopped skin cancer returning in patients during a trial, representing a potentially watershed moment in cancer treatment. Scientists used mRNA technology, which was used for some Covid-19 vaccines.
But that technology – and vaccines more generally – have become increasingly controversial in the United States since the Covid-19 pandemic. The Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, is a vaccine sceptic.
In August 2025 cancelled $500m (£376m) in funding for mRNA vaccine research. The move impacted 22 projects being led by major pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer and Moderna, for vaccines against bird flu and other viruses, according to Kennedy’s department.
We speak to Tom Whipple, host of the BBC’s Inside Science programme, about the science of this new vaccine. And we ask how funding cuts for vaccine research could impact health outcomes not just for Americans, but for the world.

Historic first as Chinese robot beats Usain Bolt’s 100m world record at Beijing games | BBC News
A Chinese humanoid robot has run 100 metres in 9.39 seconds in a preliminary heat at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, surpassing the men’s world record time held by Jamaican sprinting great Usain Bolt.
Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, won its heat at the opening of the games’ second edition. The robot overtook smartphone maker Honor’s Lightning near the finish after falling behind early in the race. Lightning finished in 9.47 seconds, also faster than the 9.58-second record Bolt set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin.
The results marked a remarkable improvement from last year’s inaugural games, when Tiangong Ultra won the 100 metres in 21.50 seconds. Tiangong also won the world’s first humanoid robot half-marathon, held in Beijing last year.
The 100 metres is among 51 events at the games, which include football, dancing and contests to complete industrial tasks.
China is promoting humanoid robots as a strategic emerging industry, with policymakers and companies betting that advances in AI and hardware will accelerate their use in manufacturing, logistics and consumer applications.
Investor enthusiasm for the sector was underscored recently when shares in Unitree, China’s best-known humanoid robot maker, jumped more than five fold in its Shanghai trading debut, giving the company a market value of about $50 billion.
This year’s games have drawn 2,056 robots from 666 teams across 16 countries and six continents, up from 280 teams at the inaugural event.

I remember children who used to have chilblains, with fingers that were frozen solid, no coat, nits, and had to have a free school meal. They couldn't read or write and were from poverty. Their benefits pay was £15 a week and they would have so many brothers and sisters they would be like learning disabled. And they would end up on drugs on street corners. Now UC is 600 plus rent with £67 top up on electric. And things were cheap. Even drugs are cheap. And the rehab went. It will be so good for them when there is new housing. Expensive but worth it. No more stiff little fingers, her dream for herself and you.

Meanwhile healthy young Albanian men are getting 24/7 heat .. free food .. free energy.. etc .. yet our families .. old and vulnerable are struggling! Oh and politicians give themselves pay rises whilst the taxpayers pay for their bills on not one .. but two properties!!!!!! Your blood will thicken the longer you are in the cold. Adjust, warmer clothes, eat starchy and fatty foods late in the day, heat yourself before bead. Get a heating stones amethyst, keep them in the blankets near your feet. Start preparing for the worst.

I live in Kalinigrad, Russia. My energy bills are 1000 – 1300 roubles total per month. That's less than 5 % of my salary.
I'm sitting in my flat right now and here is warm. My cat is sleeping near by me.
I owner by my flat.
I eat hight quality food and i have'nt choice between food or heating.

How are people like us supposed to manage? Low earners and parents of young children? the new rates of fuel at £33.20 per week (summer usage rate includes no heating) when I get under £90 per week ESA? Too sick to work last decade (worked my whole life since 16 yrs old) I’m attached to tubes to keep me alive and can’t layer up as I need frequent access to them for feeds, fluids, medications and toileting, I also have to pay rent & all bills there will be nothing left for food & my heating isn’t even on, I use medical pumps 24hrs a day too.. I can’t even afford to put the heating on this year at all, I’m freezing and it’s causing me issues with my feeds going into my jejunum too cold 😕 i’m malabsorbing the feed as it’s too cold in temperature it’s Meant to be administered warm room temperature and i’m not allowed to heat it..
