Coronavirus: More than 10,000 lives lost in Spain – BBC News
The total number of coronavirus deaths in Spain has now exceeded 10,000.
The country, the second-worst hit in terms of deaths, has also lost nearly 900,000 jobs. The US on Thursday said it saw a record 6.6 million new unemployment benefit claims
The unemployment figures are another sign of the dire impact the pandemic is having on businesses in many countries.
Worldwide, confirmed coronavirus infections are nearing one million, according to Johns Hopkins University.
The university’s tracker has recorded more than 50,200 deaths globally; while more than 204,000 people have recovered.

China has vowed to protect its interests after the US announced plans to widen economic sanctions against Iran and its trading partners, which include Beijing.

It has been five years since the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan, as western forces left, imposing their extreme, ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam on millions of people.
Their return to power brought relative peace to the country after two decades of war.
But Afghan women have been erased from public life. Girls are banned from school from the age of 12, and aren’t allowed to go to university.
Public parks are also off limits to women – and they can’t travel abroad without a male companion.
