Yazidi survivor: ‘I was raped every day for six months’ – BBC News

Published

on

Nearly three years ago, so-called Islamic State fighters swept through northern Iraq, where the country’s oldest ethnic minority were living – the Yazidis.
Many of the men were shot, while the women and children were kidnapped, taken as hostage and raped.
The Victoria Derbyshire programme’s reporter Fiona Lamdin has spent a couple of days with a small group of women who have been resettled in Germany, and are trying to rebuild their lives.

As a man I cannot fathom how anyone can bring themselves to force themselves on another human being. It is first and foremost supremely degrading to the perpetrator..

I’m sure they have disconnected themselves from any feelings or emotions. Now having to rewire their minds, souls, hearts and spirit. If I could put a few thoughts into their courageous heart I would tell them that they are loved. They are loved by the many people in this world that cries for them. That will fight for them, that prays for them. We are all Spiritual Brothers and Sisters. That this experience may or is trying to take away their self-worth at every waking and sleeping moment because of the horrific experience coming from another human being a spiritual brother as well, that has gone dark is hard to erase. Stay strong, any moments 5 seconds or 5 minutes, tell yourself that peace will come. Visualize that, it will eventually create a new pathway in your mind which will allow you live. Heavenly Father, the Father of our spirits will lead you back to that balance. To live the rest of your earth life using that experience of suffering and pain to help relieve the suffering and pain of others. God bless you and your family members still missing. You will see them again.

Meta to pay up to $18bn to settle claims its platforms harm children | BBC News

Published

on

Social media giant Meta has agreed to a $18bn (£13.3bn) settlement with US states and territories to resolve claims that Facebook and Instagram harmed children.

A California judge approved the settlement, which Meta must pay to 48 states, plus the District of Columbia and three US territories, marking the company’s largest payment over child safety litigation to date.

Meta will also implement a host of changes aimed at better protecting kids online, which the states had demanded, including default daily time limits and night-time blocks.

Meta has denied any wrongdoing as part of the settlement and said on Wednesday that the payment it agreed to “will be distributed in annual instalments over a 10-year period”.

PC Andrew Harper’s killers to stay in jail | BBC News Exclusive

Published

on

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has told the BBC that PC Andrew Harper’s killers will remain behind bars as he announces changes to the early release scheme aimed at easing prison overcrowding.

In an exclusive interview with BBC Breakfast, Burnham said anyone convicted of manslaughter will be excluded from changes brought in under the Sentencing Act, which would have made the killers eligible for early release.

Burnham said extra prison spaces would be created by deporting “hundreds” of foreign prisoners and releasing some inmates serving indefinite sentences.
