The hard border enforced by the British army was nothing to do with trade but everything to do with terrorism by the IRA, Criminals who exploit the border for financial gain

Its a touchy subject for people on both sides, and not everyone is gonna agree with the decision no matter what, a lot of people on Northern Ireland want re-unification, and a lot want to remain as part of the UK. We dont know if that would spark more Troubles again

OK so what would a United Ireland bring for the people of Northern Ireland and, what would it take away?
    1. Doctors fees to be paid for each visit to the doctor or them to your home.
    2. Less hospitals meaning, less jobs for doctors, nurses and other staff employed by the NHS.
    3. There are a small minority of people doing what I call the double double. The double is where they claim unemployment in Northern Ireland and continue to work. The double double is where they work and claim unemployment in Northern Ireland and the South.
    4. The PSNI (police) would be disbanded and officers would need to apply to transfer to the Garda (Southern Irish police). There wouldn't be enough room in the Garda for the number of officers in the PSNI.
    5. Other jobs such as fire brigade etc might survive but with a transfer to the Irish version.
    6. Water charges which are paid through rates in Northern Ireland would have to be paid direct to the supplier.
    7. The price of goods would increase by a fair amount due to Northern Ireland being transferred to the Euro from Sterling. This is what happened when Ireland excepted the Euro. Most prices were rounded up and nothing was rounded down as the economy got used to the Euro. And, those people selling realised that there was a quick killing to be made.
So in short, jobs would be lost; and prices would go up so, those people above would not want to vote for a United Ireland as it would mean them voting themselves out of work. Plus, the doctors fees normally paid for in National Insurance from peoples wages would have to be paid for to the doctors direct. Same goes for water.
It is a lot more complicated than some people think and nationalists whether they want a United Ireland or not I feel won't vote for one because of some of the reasons I have given.

I hope a united Ireland can be achieved by peaceful means. The English simply have no right to be in Ireland. The history alone should be enough to convince anyone that all of Ireland should be completely free of English rule. Once again, I really hope it’s resolved peacefully.

How about Scotland leaves first, Northern Ireland goes with Scotland and they join the EU, later forming a United Celtic Alliance, that Wales are so tempted by, then leave England to join? Cornwall joins, takes Devon with them and the English North-South divide becomes more tense until Northern England restyles itself as Southern Scotland, leaving the South East of England, to find new trading partners outside the EU.
Obviously, this wouldn’t work, so they use to rejoin the single market, but in some kind of Norwegian or Swiss style, which actually allows free movement of people. Kent is angered and calls for an all in or all out referendum, where the London population unanimously vote “all in” and England joins the EU?

To be perfectly honest considering how much of a s*** show the UK government generally is and how poorly they treat anyone outside of the main population centers of the UK. Combined with the other stupidity of brexit. I think Ireland should have been reunited a long time ago.

This is far from Majoritarian movement. 42% is a high number, but for something like this to be acceptable to all parties , at a minimum, it would need to be above 60%… We'll shall see if the trend continues…

I hope the Northern Irish do leave the UK, then we can truly be thankful that without the NI protocol Brexit can happen properly. Then the Scots can p*ss off as well, and if Wales want to join them, then I'm up for that too. They are all millstones around England's neck! England will be just fine on it's own. BTW – I'm Scottish.

the repluclic of ireland can not afford for Northern Ireland to become one. Northern Ireland is heavily supsististed by the rest of the UK. so it does not matter want they would like,e in the North southern ireland cannot afford them.

A shoe shop in Bray closed down, the owner put money into the interior walls and clearly wasn't being compensated for this investment, he tore all the walls inside the shop to rubble and left a massive mess which probably causd even more damage, I'm not saying England will do any damage here but they've put billions if not trillions into the north, local cattle preference elections aren't goin to change a thing, Britain own and built the place 😊

It seems with the new ocean border the UK has left Northern Ireland. And with the peace walls in place, the British police don't enter the Irish neighborhoods soooooo imagine London trying to inforce a land customs border between Ireland and the North. I think Scotland will breakaway. Some Ulster Scots will move to Scotland, some to England, some will stay, some will actually move deeper into Ireland. Some will marry Irish. Immigration from Africa and Syria will provide context. "Mixed marraige" of Celtic people will not be scandalous anymore. It will happen. And after these paradigm shifts England will be friendlier. All the talk of London loans will die down as Glasgow and Dublin get richer.
