Does Britain’s semiconductor industry risk being left behind? – BBC Newsnight
A new personalised vaccine given in combination with a drug has stopped skin cancer returning in patients during a trial, representing a potentially watershed moment in cancer treatment. Scientists used mRNA technology, which was used for some Covid-19 vaccines.
But that technology – and vaccines more generally – have become increasingly controversial in the United States since the Covid-19 pandemic. The Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, is a vaccine sceptic.
In August 2025 cancelled $500m (£376m) in funding for mRNA vaccine research. The move impacted 22 projects being led by major pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer and Moderna, for vaccines against bird flu and other viruses, according to Kennedy’s department.
We speak to Tom Whipple, host of the BBC’s Inside Science programme, about the science of this new vaccine. And we ask how funding cuts for vaccine research could impact health outcomes not just for Americans, but for the world.

Historic first as Chinese robot beats Usain Bolt’s 100m world record at Beijing games | BBC News
A Chinese humanoid robot has run 100 metres in 9.39 seconds in a preliminary heat at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, surpassing the men’s world record time held by Jamaican sprinting great Usain Bolt.
Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, won its heat at the opening of the games’ second edition. The robot overtook smartphone maker Honor’s Lightning near the finish after falling behind early in the race. Lightning finished in 9.47 seconds, also faster than the 9.58-second record Bolt set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin.
The results marked a remarkable improvement from last year’s inaugural games, when Tiangong Ultra won the 100 metres in 21.50 seconds. Tiangong also won the world’s first humanoid robot half-marathon, held in Beijing last year.
The 100 metres is among 51 events at the games, which include football, dancing and contests to complete industrial tasks.
China is promoting humanoid robots as a strategic emerging industry, with policymakers and companies betting that advances in AI and hardware will accelerate their use in manufacturing, logistics and consumer applications.
Investor enthusiasm for the sector was underscored recently when shares in Unitree, China’s best-known humanoid robot maker, jumped more than five fold in its Shanghai trading debut, giving the company a market value of about $50 billion.
This year’s games have drawn 2,056 robots from 666 teams across 16 countries and six continents, up from 280 teams at the inaugural event.

The UK made a conscious decision in the late 1980s, under one of the Thatcher governments, to get out of semiconductor manufacturing. The fact that it required too much investment was the excuse that I heard at the time. Indeed, the decision was the result of what to do with a government stake in a company called 'Inmos' who were the original occupiers of that Newport Wafer Fab site.
The semiconductor industry is a U. S. dominated industry and everybody else must play catch-up. It requires such major investment that a country must have it as part of its' industrial policy. Germany (France and the Netherlands, also) has invested in semiconductors over a number of decades and now the investment by Germany is really paying off with both home-grown and U. S. companies continuing to invest and develop. So, if you want to succeed in anything, copy what Germany does.

For semiconductor design US is the place and for mass production, Taiwan and Korea dominate the world, just for your basic information.

Semiconductor R&D is a multi-billion dollar investment. I wonder if Britain has the financial reserves to go it alone. Much better if Britain do this as part of an EU initiative. Oh wait …… 🤣

The Chinese are trying to wean itself off of Western technology and making everything themselves (Look up Made in China 2025 plan). They've been well known to steal technology, so what's preventing them from transferring all expertise from this purchase and cannibalizing all the equipments/knowhow from the purchase and bringing all of it back to China (therefore having most of the current workers losing their jobs anyway).
What enabled the successes of Taiwan, Japan, and Korea is heavy support and collaboration from their governments.
So what is the UK's Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology doing to support this industry with the UK's brightest minds and best universities?
What is the Department of Business and Trade doing to promote the local semiconductor business and its supporting ecosystems? If its government policy not to aide the Chinese, surely there's other entities that might be interested (maybe the Taiwanese?)

Where are the riches and brightest in UK to invest its own semi technology to the next gen or broaden its scope? The Semi manufacturing business is a very heavy capital demanding industry, (multi-billions), and highly cyclical. Therefore very risky investment. the gov't needs to step up to ensure its survival and keep-up. That's why US needs the CHIP act knowing capitalists are greedy and short-sighted.

Brexit has stripped us from the leverage of being part of a global EU market and thus we are fucked.
Tech companies will shut up shop and head to Europe and or the US because the markets are there, the investment pools are there, the government subsidies are there, the skilled workers are there and they can flow between companies ensuring flows of information and idea's. This flow of talent is what drives innovation along side crafted long-term investment and structural support (no need to choosing winners and losers ) where a conducive environment is created. China can not create such, thus it must acquire or steal or copy or reverse engineer. It is that simple.
