Canada seeks to delay euthanasia for people with mental illness – BBC Newsnight

Published

on

How much freedom governments give for people to end their own lives is a debate in the UK that won’t go away. In December, the health and social care committee announced another review into euthanasia policy in England and Wales.

Many of those engaged in the debate have increasingly looked with interest at events in Canada, whose government has been moving towards introducing some of the least restrictive laws in the world, with plans to broaden the remit of those who can end their lives to those whose sole medical condition is mental illness.

Those plans have now been delayed for at least a year amid significant controversy. So what does Canada’s faltering liberalisation on the issue tell us about the potential limits of assisted dying, and how might it inform the debate in Britain?

Newsnight’s Science and Technology Correspondent Kate Lamble reports.

What a hero! Are you poor? stressed? Having a bad day? Why not consider suicide? The government wants you to die so they can raid your pension and health care taxes. That is the sole purpose of euthanasia.

How evil. So ruin everyone's lives. Increase inflation force people to work 2/3 jobs just to keep a roof over their heads but not enough money to have nourishing food, or pay basic living essentials. Therefore causing situational depression then your own health-care staff targeting people at their most vulnerable. You are nothing more than emulating hitler

I think being able to choose whether you want to be alive or not is the ultimate human right. It's barbaric that people who don't want to be here anymore have to jump off buildings or in front of trains. There should be strict guidelines in place and every effort to go other routes but going back to my original point it really is the ultimate human right.

A person suffering from a severe mental illness may hear voices in their head. If they hear the word of God then they might be a prophet sent from god. Assisted suicide maybe killing a prophet sent from god.

  41. @Johnsonmaddog

    December 29, 2023 at 5:18 am

If schizophrenics hear voices in their head. If it's God's voice then they could be a prophet and know the word of god. They could go on to write multiple books for the bible and restore rights to own firearms for prophets or schizophrenics. They also know God's will when it comes to assisted suicide. Prophets or schizophrenics should be allowed to become political leaders or presidents

  45. @Lucypearla

    December 29, 2023 at 5:18 am

Pretty shocking- and to hear that lady say ‘it is not suicide!’ when it clearly is. I work with people with severe and enduring mental health problems, many of whom experience suicidal thoughts. If they had access to this, I’m sure they would take it. What does this say about our society that we make death readily available to people with mental health conditions? Where is the hope for recovery? This is seriously concerning.

  46. @oofmaster8721

    December 29, 2023 at 5:18 am

MAID is still a godsend to those truly suffering and these a-hole drama queens trying to politicize it to raise welfare rates by threatening MAID (or going through with it when they would have unalived themselves anyway) shouldn't derail it. The logic that something should be outright banned or severely restricted just because a few use something as not intended is ridiculous.

Right now there's no detailed initial and/or recurring psychological assessments in the US or Canada to get driver's licenses. Getting your license is not supposed to be a way to unaliving yourself or others. But it still happens yearly. So should all driver's licensing be completely scrapped or become ridiculously expensive with a million extra checks just because a few suicidal or murderous a-holes use it in a manner that it's not intended for? How about knives or any chemicals that can remotely injure someone (e.g. bleach) at your local friendly hardware store? Should we ban individual purchases of these things or again require huge government fees and months of background checks for anyone to get one just because a few a-holes misuse them?

  47. @Johnsonmaddog

    December 29, 2023 at 5:18 am

Try talking to g-d for an answer. Moses built a tent and created smoke by burning incense. Moses inhaled and exhaled untill the smoke reached the skies or heavens. Moses spoke to G-d and wrote the bible and rules.

Mental illness seem to be the new catch all cause for all victims and suspects, while climate change accounts for all other natural calamities. I guess we might as well just kiss our A… goodbye.

Cyber Attack: Ransomware causing chaos globally – BBC News

Published

on

Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught out by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.

Is this AI’s moment of truth? | BBC News

Published

on

A year ago, artificial intelligence was being sold as something close to science fiction — a technology that could transform society, cure disease, even reshape the global economy.

Today, the tone is changing. The companies leading the revolution are racing to the stock market — chasing billions in investment — while quietly confronting a much harder reality: AI is expensive, unpredictable, and far from profitable.

At the same time, some of the very people building this technology are warning we may be going too fast — even calling for a global pause.
And beyond Silicon Valley, a different story is emerging: growing public anxiety, political backlash, and the rise of what some are calling anti-AI populism.

So is AI entering its most pivotal moment yet — caught between financial pressure, technological risk, and political resistance?

AI Decoded Presenter Christian Fraser is joined by Financial Times AI Editor Madhumita Murgia, Thematic Strategist at Deutsche Bank Research Adrian Cox and Richard Coffin, Host of popular investing podcast ‘ The Plain Bagel’.
