How plastic bags were supposed to help the planet – BBC News
The plastic carrier bag has become something of a symbol for the problems caused by plastic pollution.
But according to the family of the man who created it, Sten Gustaf Thulin, his design was supposed to help the planet and he’d be shocked and upset to see what it’s become.
The Thulin family make no money from the sale of the bags.
BBC Environment Reporter Laura Foster explains what was supposed to happen and why paper and cotton bags can actually be worse for the environment than plastic ones that are recycled.

Coronavirus: Trump claims advice to inject disinfectant was just “sarcasm” – BBC News
One of the world’s biggest disinfectant manufacturers has issued an urgent warning, after President Trump suggested people could inject themselves with the substance to treat coronavirus.
The company which makes products including Dettol and Vanish warned that “under no circumstance” should its products be administered to humans “through injection, ingestion or any other route”.
Disinfectants are poisonous if ingested and even external exposure can be dangerous to the skin, eyes and respiratory system. The President’s comments were heavily criticised by medical experts. Later he said he was simply being sarcastic. 50,000 people have now died in the United States from coronavirus infection.

Brexit: MPs block Prime Minister’s bid for early election – BBC News
The UK Prime Minister’s demand for an early General Election looks set to be rejected by Members of Parliament after opposition parties agreed it shouldn’t take place until after the European Union Summit in mid-October.
Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru the party of Wales say they won’t back the government’s bid for an election. They declared they wanted an extension to the Brexit date of October 31st to guarantee that the UK won’t leave the EU without a deal.
On a visit to Scotland, Mr Johnson accused them of making an “extraordinary political mistake”. It came as the House of Lords approved a bill to prevent a no-deal Brexit. It will get royal assent and become law on Monday.
Our Deputy Political Editor John Pienaar reports, Reeta Chakrabarti presents.

Brexit trade deal finally agreed – BBC News
A post-Brexit trade deal has finally been agreed, four and a half years after the UK voted to leave the European Union.
The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it would protect jobs and provide certainty for business.
After months of talks and frantic last-minute wrangling over fishing, negotiators finally reached agreement on Christmas Eve, with just a week to go before the deadline when the UK’s transition period was coming to an end.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula Von de Leyen, described it as a good and fair agreement.
Some business leaders said the agreement had come as a “huge relief”. However others — along with some British politicians — said they would wait to study the details of the agreement before reaching a judgement on it.
Sophie Raworth presents BBC News reporting by political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Europe editor Katya Adler, business editor Simon Jack, deputy political editor Vicki Young, James Cook in Glasgow, Tomos Morgan in Cardiff and Emma Vardy in Belfast.

Trump threatens to bomb Oman and demands Iran surrender | BBC News
President Donald Trump has threatened to bomb Oman – a US ally – if it “gets in the way” of his administration’s own talks with Iran, Fox News reports.
The US and Oman have separately been negotiating with Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that is vital to the global economy. It has been largely closed for nearly six months during the US-Iran war.
The threat came after the 60-day Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two sides expired. The future of talks between the US and Iran is now unclear.

True. In Soviet Union and Countries of Warsaw Pact people were washing those and hanging like laundry coz those were hard to get and there was a culture of preserving things. It is USA that spread consumeristic buy and large culture. It was not effect of communism it was just a thing enrooted in cultures of Eastern Europe

In Canada our milk is packaged in disposable plastic bags like 4L distributed in 3 pouches wrapped in another bag. So much waste. Our Marijuana is similarly wrapped in plastic.

Plastic bags aren't recycled, that is why we have them killing our nature. Don't remember seeing a cotton or paper bag killing animals and taking thousands of years de-composting.

It’s quite disheartening to practice zero waste living. Looking at all the plastic bags and disposal materials being carted around by food delivery people especially during this covid19 pandemic times , I wonder if my effort of ZWL is making a difference. But I’m determined to play my part.

Good job, you have now created plastic waste areas in the oceans.

This video makes the situation of our planet very clear, the planet is highly polluted by plastics and bags, this is affecting too much, since people use plastic bags too much, we must take care of our planet so that new generations can inhabit it, we could Recycle the bags over and over again, so that the high levels of contamination are reduced and we can stop affecting the flora and fauna of our planet.

lol, recycle it! That's not really gonna happen since recycling it probably is the worst idea for the environement the best things to do before recycling are : reusing, reinjecting, repuroposing etc ! Recycling is just a way for companies to place the responsability on somebody else while the consummer thinks he's doing something good. Very little of what we put in recycling bins doesn't end up in landfills and in our environement.
