Have Turkey’s building designs impacted the earthquake death toll? – BBC Newsnight
As the consequences of the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have become clear, attention has turned to why the impact has been so great.
For example, a 2014 quake just off the coast of Chile – slightly larger at a magnitude of 8.2 – resulted in just 7 fatalities.
Anger is growing in Turkey that poor enforcement of regulations contributed to the collapse of many buildings in the recent earthquakes.
The BBC has verified examples of recently built blocks that collapsed in the latest disaster.
One in Malatya was finished last year. Screenshots circulating on social media showed an advert saying it was “completed in compliance with the latest earthquake regulations.”
Newsnight’s Science and Technology Correspondent Kate Lamble looks at the country’s history of earthquake-resistant building and the lessons it has learnt from previous quakes.

Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught out by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.

So where does this put the rest of Turkey with perhaps thousands of buildings built with lax regulations over the last 2 decades? A huge legacy of tragic proportions for the Turkish people everywhere. Another significant lesson for humanity: leaders playing to popular opinion against sound reason. The Turkish people voted for this man and his shortsighted solutions because they wanted progress at the cost of ignoring basic regulations in construction. People are always looking for short-term benefits of their political leaders without seeing long term potential harm. A good leader would have argued for tightening construction rules and not bent to industry and popular demands – even if he lost elections, find another way forward. The good decisions leaders make often don't get recognized, but the bad one like this will surely last decades. It's another reminder of the value of Integrity in leadership.

600 people in Turkey now being investigated for FLAWED CONSTRUCTION METHODS. Well, if there are BUILDING CODES, which has been stated are in fact in place, then these BUILDING CODES need to be supported by INSPECTIONS by AUTHORIZED INSPECTORS ……otherwise all the BUILDING CODES around the world would be a complete waste of time.
It should be assumed that there ARE GOVERNMENT BUILDING INSPECTORS. IT IS THESE PEOPLE WHO HAVE FAILED TO DO THEIR JOBS AND UPHOLD THE BUILDING CODES. So FIRST, GO AFTER EVERY BUILDING INSPECTOR WHO APPROVED EACH BUILDING THAT HAS FALLEN …..AND THROW THEM IN JAIL. SECOND, GO AFTER EVERY CONTRACTOR WHO HAS BEEN IN CHARGE OF EVERY ONE OF THE BUILDINGS THAT HAS FALLEN ….AND THROW THEM IN JAIL.
THIRD, re-group the GOVERNMENT BUILDING INSPECTORS AND HIRE EXTRA INSPECTORS TO ENSURE EVERY "NEW" REPLACEMENT BUILDING IS PROPERLY INSPECTED TO THE BUILDING CODES ……with the very clear warning that any building that might fail in the future, due to an earthquake, will result in both BUILDING INSPECTORS AND CONTRACTORS GOING TO JAIL FOR A VERY LONG TIME.

There is corruption everywhere in the world. The contractors can be sued later but right now, the main focus should be on rescue. The chances are low but there is still a possibility that there are survivors who are just waiting for help. Paying attention on the contractors is only taking the time away from the rescue.

Honestly what happened is beyond sad n understand! But ts not the builders fault this horrible thing has happened. It's not fair for them to feel guilty over something they had no control over. Non was expecting this Satan earth quake! Even the buildings that are standing foundations are shaken and cracked. It's probably not safe for them to go back regardless. Once again I am deeply saddened by what has happened. None deserved what happened to them💔 😭😭

We had a 6.9 one here months ago here in Taiwan if I remembered correctly (sorry for my bad memory but we just have too many of them, so if nothing big happened I simply just clear my head) Railway torted and bridges collapsed and a 7-11 fell down I remembered, but miraculously not many were killed for all those collapsing…. I heard there was one dead in the factory because he was fixing the machine when the quake hit, and the machine fell on him. I guess the experience of a disastrous earthquake in 1999 taught us bloody lessons than you better take earthquake resistance of buildings seriously when you live on an island frequented by quakes, but I'm not sure how long the lessons could be kept…..our buildings are getting older over years and there are still plenty of them need to be reconstructed by refused to, I really doubt they could hold on in a scenario similar to which happened in Turkey today….
