Why are the Dutch so tall? BBC News

Published

on

The Dutch are, on average, the world’s tallest people, but it hasn’t always been that way.

So what happened? Scientists believe a number of factors are responsible, such as genetics, better diet and medical care.

But now there’s another theory. Research from the London School of Tropical Medicine suggests that natural selection may also have something to do with it.

Jane O’Brien went to the Netherlands to find out more.

My Indian father is 6'3" and mother 5'4". Final byproduct is my sister with 5'8" and me as male child at 5'11.5"😅
I feel bad to be short of height as my all male cousins above 6'2" height as their mother's were tall.

    What is an American?

The learned Harvard professor talks of genetics, the Dutch vs the Americans. But can we “Americans” be collectively discussed genetically? Other factors the Americans share like diet, etc, for sure. Maybe I’m losing my mental faculties at 75, or perhaps it’s my distaste and disrespect of the BBC that has suffocated what brain cells I have remaining.

ok full disclosure we are talking about about 5cm's right?
also the netherlands is mostly mono ethnic, the US has a lot of minorities who generally are smaller, median hight would probably be a better metric

According to data, 18-year-old men from Montenegro (as a country) are currently the tallest in the world (182.9 cm; almost exactly 6 ft), surpassing their Dutch peers (182.4 cm; 5.98 ft) by half a centimeter (about a quarter inch).

Even so, the Montenegrins don’t stand out among their neighbors. The 18-year-old men from Dalmatia, the southern region of Croatia, measure 183.7 cm (6.03 ft). Croatians in Herzegovina, average 183.4 cm (6.02 ft). In a small, contiguous belt connecting Dalmatia via southern Herzegovina to central Montenegro, the average height is even above 184 cm (6.04 ft).

Can dutch men donate their sperms to a couple who wants to have a taller child..??

They now say the average here in the Netherlands is lowering and say it is because of the food.

Well, that's possibly a factor, but of course the greatest reason for the lowering of the average is immigration. But we live in a time that we cannot just be honest about that, so you often don't even see this addressed in articles about it.

The reason we are tall in the Netherlands is obviously not just a food thing. Its also: genetics, ethnicity.

The Dutch emerged as a product of the founder effect. The original 'ethnic' Dutch were simply taller. This may have provided an advantage or occurred just by chance. Tall stature simply persisted.

Meghan apologises to court for misleading statement in privacy case – BBC News

Published

on

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex has apologised to a court for forgetting about biography briefing notes she gave to an aide, in her privacy case against the Mail on Sunday’s publishers.

The Appeal Court heard she had asked an aide to pass on information to the authors of a biography – despite having earlier said she “did not contribute” to the work.

Meghan said she had forgotten the events and had not intended to mislead.

Associated Newspapers is trying to overturn a ruling after it published a letter from the duchess to her father.

Meghan, 40, won her privacy case against the publisher of the Mail on Sunday earlier this year, when the High Court found its publication of the letter was unlawful.

Iran-US peace talks fail to reach deal as Washington issues ‘final offer’ | BBC News

Published

on

Vice-President JD Vance has said that the US and Iran failed to reach an agreement following lengthy peace talks in Pakistan.

The delegations met in Islamabad during a temporary ceasefire.

Vance said the US “could not get to a situation where the Iranians were willing to accept our terms”. Halting Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been a “core goal” that wasn’t reached.

Iran’s foreign ministry says the talks were “intensive”, and called on Washington to refrain from “excessive demands and unlawful requests”.
