The Holocaust: Front Page News in Maine
Many of the major newspapers in the United States ran what information they had on the Holocaust as far away from the front pages as possible, often tucked somewhere between advertisements for various household items and the obituaries. As a result, the majority of Americans were ill-informed about the fate of European Jewry at the hands of the Nazis.
Unfortunately, this was the case in many major newspapers before and during the war, and Omlor assumed that it was true in Maine as well. However, in 2017, Omlor participated in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s (USHMM) “History Unfolded” program with her students. This program was created by USHMM to help discover what was known by Americans about what was happening to the Jews of Europe under the Nazi regime. “It asks students, teachers, and history buffs throughout the United States what was possible for Americans to have known about the Holocaust as it was happening and how Americans responded. Participants look in local newspapers for news and opinion about 41 different Holocaust-era events that took place in the United States and Europe, and submit articles they find to a national database, as well as information about newspapers that did not cover events.”
Omlor discovered that one of the larger newspapers in Maine, The Lewiston Daily Sun, published considerable information about the persecution of European Jewry and the Holocaust on its front pages, rather than buried deep in the paper like many other major newspapers of the time. With additional research, she found that other Maine newspapers followed suit, and provided pertinent information about the Holocaust on their front pages as well.
Additionally, Omlor looked at a variety of sources to identify any rescue or relief efforts of European Jews on the part of Maine citizens, both from the Jewish and non-Jewish communities. The last area she researched was whether or not Maine actively participated in bringing Displaced Persons (DP’s) to the state after the war. She discovered that 674 DP’s came to Maine in the years immediately following the war, many choosing to settle in Maine.

Heidi Omlor has a Master’s of Arts in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, is a Social Studies Teacher at Ellsworth High School, and a PhD Candidate in Holocaust Studies at Gratz College.
