Throughout the summer negotiations have continued between the UK and EU to try and resolve Brexit. However, despite both sides supposedly wanting a deal – little progress has been made. So in this video, we discuss what’s happened and whether they’ve actually given up on negotiations.

The big issue for fishing in France is the rights Britain has already sold for the next 10 years to private companies for billions

It’s simple the EU give into the UK’s fishing demands and then block fish from the UK entering the EU market Cheep fish in the UK.That will make up for the coast of higher food prices.

So speaking as someone watching this from the US…. it seems completely unreasonable that the EU will insist on the UK leaving that the EU still gets to use the seas that international law would recognize as being sovereign UK waters. This feels a little like an attempt to treat an independent UK as an EU colony, extracting their resources and claiming parts of their territory while not being able to have any say on the politics involved in the exploitation of that resource.

Certainly an exit without some deal in place is desirable for everyone, but this seems like an issue that should have been put to bed ages ago. the UK has every right to say they don't want to share their waters with another nation if they so choose.

Fishing might only account for 0.1% of the UK's GDP, but how much does UK fish make for the other countries in the EU? If we took back our waters and sell the fish to the EU would we make much more than 0.1%? Honestly I would like to know.

I don't think a Brexit deal can spontaneously come into existence unless the UK completely caves. Last year the deal was only made by Johnson accepting the pre-existing internal customs border deal from the EU that May rejected as unacceptable and lethal to the political union of the UK. Now Johnson's turned on that deal and trying to subvert it after the fact. There is no pre-existing deal to sign unless the UK wants to wholesale adopt the EU's terms and functionally remain in the EU under its rules without its benefits. The UK won't even produce a clear statement of its own goals in the talks. This brinkmanship is just British bluster; the EU has prepared for Brexit, the UK hasn't. Either the UK government will cave to the EU and anger their supporters or they'll deal a lethal wound to the Union and their economy just to spitefully try to prove a point.

What’s the point of negotiating with a country when they’re just going to legislate over whatever treaty you negotiate?

Negotiations are only as good as the confidence you can have in a party keeping their word, and with Johnson set to override parts of the deal he negotiated only six months ago, they clearly aren’t confident.

TL;DR, you can’t negotiate with backstabbers.

When one side says a deal is "still possible" and the other says it is "unlikely", that's a bad time to hold your breath for a deal.

I think the UK negotiators should tell the EU "you can either accept that the UK will leave the EU common fishing policy and stop allowing EU fishing boats to fish in the UK and get a Brexit deal or you can refuse to negotiate, get a no-deal Brexit and EU fishing boats get nothing anyway as well as all the negatives of a no-deal Brexit"

  20. @TomBortels

    December 27, 2023 at 9:13 pm

Anyone thinking a No-Deal Brexit wasn't the intent of many of the politicians involved in Brexit, despite their track record, hasn't been paying attention. Politicians lie*. Some of them knew a very simple fact – the best way to get a No-Deal Brexit was to pretend that wasn't their goal. If they *really hadn't wanted a No-Deal Brexit, they would have taken steps to avoid it – and they clearly haven't, hindsight being 20/20.

  21. @jfwfreo

    December 27, 2023 at 9:13 pm

I don't get why the EU is so fixated on fishing…
Do a lot of people from EU countries make their living fishing in waters claimed by the UK and can't go fish somewhere else?

The uk is over stating its position, and are the ones that messed up these talks.

Like i said at start, eu should of chucked uk out, and then went with talks on deals.

The uk is pissing everyone around, by claiming there in some strong position when they are not. The uk caused this mess, and why do they assume the idea that they have the upper hand. They do not, the eu has.

    The eu owes uk nothing.

  25. @georgeegeorgee

    December 27, 2023 at 9:13 pm

One of the quirks of the fishing issue is that most of the fish cought in UK waters is traded into the EU market. The UK wants to close their waters to EU fishermen but continue to export into the EU without restrictions (without border tarrifs) to the EU market. i.e. 'having the cake and eating it all' , and of course to all that the UK govt is cherry picking…I sincerely hope that the EU will not budge to this thugish elbowing technique exerted by the Boris conservatives

Can someone explain from Britain why they support Brexit, it just seems like its based off of pride. It also seems like it weakens the unity and peace in Europe.

  28. @BobBinghamNZ

    December 27, 2023 at 9:13 pm

The EU will be much better off without the UK as it can pursue its original ambitions of becoming a world power. The UK is only a mouthpiece for USA policies.
