Aspartame: Could the sweetener be possible cause of cancer? – BBC Newsnight

Published

on

There are reports that Aspartame, the sweetener in products all over the world, from chewing gum to diet cola, is soon likely to be declared a possible carcinogen by the WHO’s cancer research agency.

But what’s the science behind such a potential move – and how justified would it be?

Newsnight’s Science and Technology Correspondent Kate Lamble explains.

Why why why why why don't they just use honey in soft drinks…how much honey does it actually take to sweeten a can of soda??? With natural honey…with manuka honey…etc etc..

anything with aspartame tastes absolutely disgusting to me, i can usually immediately identify it when its present in a drink (diet coke, fresca etc) ive heard for at least 10 minutes that it can cause cancer, but regardless of whether or not thats true i would never willingly consume it.

Artificial sweeteners and a host of other chemicals we consume daily have no place in the human body….. if they dont cause cancer they will cause other diseases for sure…… even natural sugar is terribly damaging to the entire body….. it shouldnt be consumed at all…..its a poison like the other chemicals.

It is sad that here in finland sugar taxes rises and companies are using more and more sugar artificial sweetener and cancer kills people more and more here so i believe also this has something to do with cancer..

Bottomline is, everything should be in moderation.

  16. @EchoChaser96

They are so tricky with the wording. Aspartame itself isn’t the problem they would make it seem, but when digested Aspartame breaks down into formaldehyde.
Formaldehyde causes cancer and that’s a fact. Honestly, we are better off using natural sugars but limiting the amount we use.

The WHO & USDA will never say anything for sure about products cause those companies will sue. If someone's mom gets cancer and dies, the family will probably never be able to sue cause they have no clout. Just like back in the 1960s, we were warned about using ingesting corn syrup, and we all know more people heeded that warning.

Artificial sweetener has been known to cause Cancer since before I was born. I first found this out in the 90s. I only eat sweetener like maple syrup, honey, cane sugar. Because I know how it's made and if you keep your use to moderation your okay. Real sugar isn't bad but not everything that is sweet is great for you.

  31. @francessimmonds5784

    December 27, 2023 at 5:29 pm

I do my best to never to ingest any artificial sweeteners. In recent years they’ve been particularly difficult to avoid. You used to get a choice of sugar free or regular (with sugar) choices in drinks and squashes but the big name brands now ALL contain sweeteners, even the “regulars”. There are lesser known brands available that still contain sugar with no sweeteners but you have to really search them out.

The sugar industry is panicking because they realized they are now the villian in 2023, everyone is cutting out sugar and grains and carbs. They need to blame something on sweetener

People said this for years and were branded conspiracy theorists even though they quoted early research!

Also synthetic sweeteners like Sucralose and Scesulfame K destroy friendly gut bacteria.
Not to mention the increasing use of carcinogenic preservative Sodium Benzoate!

  37. @alexbowman7582

There’s an increase in cancers due to the effects of a certain recent jab which suppresses the immune system.

alright.. I'll go back to alcohol only then. Surely this won't end worse as well…. everything is bad if not in moderation. breathing air nowadays could kill you. I'll take the zero calorie over sugar, drinking a zero calorie drink once or twice a week and rather cut out the normal sugar as best as possible. It's simple

Cyber Attack: Ransomware causing chaos globally – BBC News

Published

Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught out by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.

Is this AI’s moment of truth? | BBC News

Published

on

A year ago, artificial intelligence was being sold as something close to science fiction — a technology that could transform society, cure disease, even reshape the global economy.

Today, the tone is changing. The companies leading the revolution are racing to the stock market — chasing billions in investment — while quietly confronting a much harder reality: AI is expensive, unpredictable, and far from profitable.

At the same time, some of the very people building this technology are warning we may be going too fast — even calling for a global pause.
And beyond Silicon Valley, a different story is emerging: growing public anxiety, political backlash, and the rise of what some are calling anti-AI populism.

So is AI entering its most pivotal moment yet — caught between financial pressure, technological risk, and political resistance?

AI Decoded Presenter Christian Fraser is joined by Financial Times AI Editor Madhumita Murgia, Thematic Strategist at Deutsche Bank Research Adrian Cox and Richard Coffin, Host of popular investing podcast ‘ The Plain Bagel’.
