The Attica Prison Rebellion – BBC News
On September 9th 1971 inmates at Attica maximum security facility in New York State rioted and seized control of the jail, taking guards hostage.
When negotiations failed, the authorities stormed the prison, dropping tear gas from helicopters and firing hundreds of live rounds. At least 39 people were killed, including nine of the hostages.
Former prisoner, Carlos Roche, spoke to Witness History and described the chaos in this video produced in 2016.

Seven killed and 23 missing after boat capsizes off northern Cyprus | BBC News
Seven people have died after a passenger boat capsized near northern Cyprus.
Search and rescue operations are under way to find 23 people missing, said Ünal Üstel, prime minister of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
He says 267 people were on board the vessel when it capsized, and 237 have been rescued.
The boat left from the northern Cypriot port of Kyrenia at 11:58 local time (09:58 BST) and officials said it capsized around four nautical miles into its journey to Turkey.

Ukrainians in Russian-occupied areas told to be ready to fight for Russia – BBC News
Ukraine’s progress against Russian forces in its southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia has been far more limited than its successes in the north-east.
Both sides come under regular fire as they rely heavily on artillery to push forward.
The crackdown on people who do not support Russian rule in occupied areas is rising, with soldiers going door-to-door to check on who lives in each house and whether they could be drafted into fighting for Russia.

Govt will apply “extreme caution” to easing lockdown – BBC News
The government has said it will exercise “extreme caution” over lifting the lockdown. Ministers stress it will be a gradual process, not a single leap to freedom. It comes as the Prime Minister prepares to address the nation, to set out the next phase in tackling the coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile major airlines have called for clarity after being told that the government will bring in a 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving in the UK, from any country apart from the Republic of Ireland.
The transport secretary Grant Shapps has called on people to walk and cycle to work, once the lockdown restrictions are eased in England. He said it was a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to transform the way people get around.
Senior clerics are urging the government to act cautiously before allowing places of worship to reopen. All churches, mosques, synagogues and temples closed their doors almost two months ago.

UK confirms ban on extradition to Hong Kong as tension with China rises – BBC News
In the latest evidence of growing tension between Britain and China the foreign secretary Dominic Raab has confirmed that the UK is suspending its extradition treaty with Hong Kong.
It’s in response to Beijing’s imposition of a new security law aimed at ending political protests in Hong Kong.
The UK has already offered residency rights to 3 million Hong Kong citizens but China has accused the UK of “brutal meddling” in its internal affairs.
In Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigners who fought against the introduction of the security law say they’re being pursued by the Chinese authorities.
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting from Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg and from Danny Vincent in Hong Kong.

Today in Tennessee, protesters fighting against gun control sat in a session. Protesters were quietly seated in house and holding up homemade small signs saying, “Stop gun violence”. The Speaker of the House a pro for guns, demanded the State Troopers to physically remove the young white protesters from the session. They have freedom of speech and their rights to be present in the session. However, state troopers are why police brutality and excessive violence is rampant now. Tennessee is calling for additional State troopers. I suggested folks watch “Attica” so they can see State Troopers in action at their finest. Also, to understand why America is loosing the gun battle and how State Troopers are credited for executing the utmost violence on civilian citizens. Guns will continue to win especially with Troopers behind the trigger.

Shit happens when you have hard core career criminals taking guard hostages ….. bad things happen like guars getting shot and killed by State Troopers , that was by accident and confusion , no trooper would have shot a guard on purpose ….. you have to remember that the cons had to have done some very bad things to get sentenced to Attica ….. their not choirboys !

Just watched a documentary about this. Had me so pissed. Prison guards, state troopers, national guardsmen, a warden, a governor, congressmen, and even Nixon all were horribly wrong. The guards and warden caused the tension with the deplorable conditions to start it all off. Then to shoot these people down while yelling racially charged insults at them, make survivors crawl through feces, strip them naked, push batons in some of their anal cavities, torture them, and be proud of it all is sickening. Not to mention to lie on the inmates for the hostage deaths except for the one is beyond me. Especially when the hostages had bullet wounds instead of knife wounds when the inmates had no guns. They shot hostages who ran towards them for help. In the end not one was held accountable for the hostage deaths except 2 inmates who had taken the life of one. Nixon asked the governor of NY if they were all black to where the governor said they were. Nixon then praised the governor for his handling of the situation. I guess Nixon was ok as long as he thought they’d were all black. Sick sick sick!

Conservative authorities were looking for ways to lock up people of color since the 1960's. This was right about the time they increased penalties for marijuana, making it a felony. That way, less minorities could vote. Many of the men at Attica were there just for having a joint or a bag of weed in their possession in their cars or homes. Sentences were from 2 years to 20 years. Just for weed.

December 26, 2023 at 6:35 pm
People seem to forget the past. It's only because we live in this era that most prisoners in any prison are still alive and have some sort of resemblance of a life. Most would have been executed for petty crimes or died from hard labor much younger and been forgotten. It's when you Stop having empathy for these low-lifes and prisons become a living hell that you will get not only true justice for the victims, but you will also send a warning to all citizens that this is not a place you want to go. When prisons look like free motels with home-cooked meals, movies, the deterrence factor drops and crime goes up because for many thugs, it's a second home and the risk is worth the crimes they commit. A bonus if they don't get caught.
