Number of small boats crossing Channel down, officials say | BBC News
Border officials in the UK and France have said there has been a “really significant” drop in the number of migrants crossing the English Channel this year in small boats.
Official figures are down by over a third compared with 2022.
The UK has helped to fund a doubling of French police patrolling the border along with other measures like drones.
But tens of thousands of migrants remain ready to attempt the dangerous journey.

China has vowed to protect its interests after the US announced plans to widen economic sanctions against Iran and its trading partners, which include Beijing.

It has been five years since the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan, as western forces left, imposing their extreme, ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam on millions of people.
Their return to power brought relative peace to the country after two decades of war.
But Afghan women have been erased from public life. Girls are banned from school from the age of 12, and aren’t allowed to go to university.
Public parks are also off limits to women – and they can’t travel abroad without a male companion.
