Over the weekend the FT reported plans (https://www.ft.com/content/f77fe7ee-6165-427a-8754-e90d22d5689f) that would see the threshold for student debt payments lowered. So in this video, we discuss what the report would mean, the changes that will be made and if it’s really fair.

I want to do an apprenticeship and not go university,I get good grades mostly A’s yet my parents think apprenticeships are dumb and for uneducated people,I guess I’ll have to go university and expect to have debts after I graduate.

My fellow UK mates apprenticeship is the only method now.

I knew a girl who did a 4 year degree, took max maintenance loans out and then married a super rich guy, married and had kids. She works part time in his company and has 0 intention on ever paying back a penny.

The student "loan" is not a loan, it's an additional income tax with accountancy duplicity built in, whereby what is actually government debt is transferred into an individuals name (and out of the governments name) for a period of 30 – and soon to become 40 years.

  5. @grizmiz929

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

Stay at home get a pt job and don't take any loans 🙃 . If only 35% are paying bk in full then something needs to be done

  6. @slawomirbielecki

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

So you basically need to pay off your student debt your entire life? What nonsense! Luckily in Poland we have free higher education

  7. @colincampbell4261

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

Why not a 1% graduate tax until loan is paid off. Or is that too simple?

  8. @yousefmohamed9957

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

There is somthing i really dont understand. why dont you all study in germany. if my country asks me to pay 450000 euros i will be an idiot if i stayed while its free in a next door country.

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

So, for the amount of one year tuition fee in England, I can graduate four times from the top ranked university in my country and at the end we don't have any student loan? Sweet!

Hillariously Student Loans are also not covered by declaring Personal Bancruptcy. There is no escaping it.

This is why y'all need to focus on trade school and apprentice shops.

The college industrial complex is ripping you people off but unfortunately you guys don't want to face that fact so you just be stupid enough to take this debt just to go to those expensive colleges and universities. YOU PEOPLE ARE STUPID.

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

    Pick two:
    Small minimum repayments
    Large amount of borrowing
    Ability to pay off dept

  14. @adamambler5915

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

we really should just elliminate student fees and make it all paid for by government. its just an extra tax for being educated and throws debt onto young people that they will almost never get rid of. and if you want to throw the argument of 'why should the taxpayer pay for it', who do you think the loans come from in the first place? its the taxpayer and the vast majority of it is never paid back anyway. you could litterally just make university 'free' at little to no extra cost to government and stop lumping students with tons of extra debt and taxes for being educated. and if you really belive that there are too many arts or social science graduates (id dissagree) then you can at least make it 'free' to those in subjects that you want to promote more of like medical and STEM degrees.

  15. @Ben-tv5fy

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

Key thing wrong at the start; it’s not ‘Family’ income, it’s household income. That makes a judge difference for mature students, which comprises a large % of places on courses like Nursing Degrees. If a student lives with their partner, regardless of marital status their partners income is taken into account and assumes to be available to them to pay for their living costs for the duration

  18. @simmerke1111

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

How is this legal? The student loan system is so broken everywhere… I can take out a loan cheaper than this to splurge on something I absolutely don't need.

  19. @tp-op0928

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

You need to remember that the Tory government has probably lost an entire generation of voters (for reasons like this), and that once the older Tory voter are gone (over the next ten to twenty years), there will be a political shift. Millennials (me and my generation) are not going to be voting Tory (unless mummy and daddy have helped pay for everything).

  20. @Darthwilkins

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

If they want to encourage non-degree courses, why reduce or lower the barriers for those courses?

  21. @lorkieborkie2537

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

a nice passive agressive strategy to bully students into becoming engineers, surely that won't backfire…

  22. @mladen89ftn

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

Have they considered allowing bank to issue student loans that are not guaranteed by the government? Something tells me that they would be more than happy to finance STEM, medicine, economy and even law, as these are the most likely to actually repay the loan in the coarse of their lifetime…

  23. @_vallee_5190

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

"The UK has free college" my ass.

  24. @vikthestampede

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

It's not exactly good news, but too many kids are studying garbage degrees in social sciences that the government will end up paying for. That's unsustainable.

  25. @almeidaserra

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

RPI… probably not. The repayment, absolutely 1- it is a loan, 2- part of the education is subsidized beyond the tuition, 3- if these were "gifts" then the people who did NOT go to university, and are also likely to earn less than many of those who did, would be footing that bill… now THAT would be unfair. They already to, but increasing that burden on income tax for all (including the ones who did not benefit from higher education) would be very wrong.

And yes, one needs to make decisions and be responsible for the consequences. Perhaps it is a better idea to study math, or software engineering (or almost ANY kind of engineering) than it would be to study "gender studies" or " Ethnomathematics," … it is a choice, a personal choice… it should come with personal responsibility for the consequences

  26. @Notsogoodguitarguy

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

TLDR, to be fair, 30 years for people earning 30k a year would mean they would pay 18000 pounds, which is 2/3 of what they would actually borrow if I understand the loan correctly. So, yeah, for lower income people, it's still probably worth it. It's people that earn around 50k a year that would pay higher.

  27. @Sams-li8tj

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

Could you do a video comparing Germany and UK? How come Germans get free education, healthcare, welfare and still have a bigger economy with a higher median income as well? I assume Germany spends very little on military but it that all?

  28. @sharelletaylor7619

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

This is why I will be moving to another country. This government does absouty nothing to invest in future generations. Everything is geared towards an aging population of home owners. I'm out… the quality of life is a joke.

  29. @a.a.6203

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

That guy with his messy hair, looks like a villain.
Let's open only fans, why bother with college lol

  30. @occu310

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

45000 pounds come on I will stop studying if I have that much money

  31. @tommenr3928

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

Education should be a community's investment in its future, and thus be given freely. Student debt compromises mental health and is therefore NOT good for the population. I said investment – and investments cost money. Why should people who don't go to university pay for it? Well, maybe they profit from the existence of doctors, writers, research, etc. as well?
Oh, I'm sorry, did I say community? Forget about that, everyone needs to fight for themselves and compete with the others to make it to the top of the chain of exploitation and be a hero! Gogogo!

  32. @OrstyJ

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

So basically Boris Johnson’s thesis is “Non-STEM lives don’t matter”

  33. @lookupfromdownunder5218

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

Education should be paid for by the Government. They only educate you, so they can tax you more so it should be a service, like it used to be.

  34. @lexslate2476

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

They're conservatives. Hurting people is the point. Eject them from government as soon as possible. Ideally with some kind of catapult.

  35. @SWBF2-2005IsBestStfu

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

2:28…..it could be that they did that to inflate the amount that is replayed…… Or it could be that the government uses the lower amount to avoid paying more to pensioners

  36. @Doom1981

    December 26, 2023 at 8:49 pm

If the Government feels the need to decrease deficits tax into the saving rates, not into the lower incomes.

Of course if you feel the need the free up resources this kind of scheme is very useful, because it will hurt demand and free up resources in the economy

It seems pretty much a certainty that Andy Burnham will be the next British prime minister. Exactly when it happens depends on a few factors. We outline some of the reasons an early general election is likely.
