‘My BMI wasn’t low enough to get help’ – BBC News
As a teenager, Victoria Spence says she fell into a “deep, dark hole” about her own body image.
This led to her developing an eating disorder. But when she tried to seek help, Victoria was told her Body Mass Index (BMI) wasn’t low enough for treatment.
BMI is used to measure if someone is a “healthy” weight, based on an adult’s weight and height.
Victoria is supporting calls for the measure to be scrapped.
The UK government says NHS England does not support the use of “BMI thresholds”.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News
The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.
In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News
President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.
He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.
Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.
Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.
The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

New explosions near Iranian port cities, says state media | BBC News
Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.
It comes after another night of strikes between the US and Iran, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it hit two UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and targeted US facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.
The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.
Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News
The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.
Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.
President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.

this is so sick. Why should people only get help when they are already at their worst and not early to prevent bad things…? I don't have anorexia but I also have a eating disorder. I used to selfharm and I remember the first time I went to a doctor, the doctor told me that is wasn't the worst selfharming she had seen and that it would be "nothing". That triggered me so hard that it got worse.
Luckily I am selfharm-free for almost two years now. But I am still struggling with an eating disorder. I wish everyone good luck who struggling with any kind of problems! ❤

Ive had a bmi of ~14-15 for years now but no doctor ive ever gone to would even consider something might be wrong. Every time ive asked about it they would say a variation of “eh its fine for now” without so much as looking at me the whole appointment.

.i stayed too heavy for frame ive dwarfism and became prediabetic and got osteoporosis in my spine. I was accused if being anorexic for wanting to lose enough weight to get rid of my pre diabetes I told the person to fxxx off. How thin your frame is plays a huge role in how much you can weigh. My bmi is now 24. Arrogance gets people nowhere. I've got knee pain and disgusted in it. I used to call my legs the twins as you gotta laugh 😃 keep the diet low in sugar and sat fat and you can't gain

After trying to get help with my problems with food at the psyciatric clinic where I live (i didn't got help). I've asked an eating disorder clinic in a city nearby. That was last month. They didn't want me there and referred to the psykiatric clinic again. I told them they won't listen and ignores my issues.
The psyciatric clinic won't help me. They say I don't have an eating disorder. "The reason you're not eating is a result of what's happening around you, bc of your depression".
I told them the reason I won't eat but they aren't listning to me. I've been in an out from the psyciatric clinic for at least 15 years.

Why are medical professionals using BMI when Ideal Body Weight, coupled with ECG data sets taken over a couple of weeks, has and always will be far far more accurate and relevant in determining whether someone is at an optimal weight?
Seems ludicrous to me that we pay doctors who fundamentally do not understand nutrition or physical exercise. In all honesty I’ve never been to a GP who’s been competent in anything other than palming me off to someone else or prescribing me a bunch of pills.
Our NHS hasn’t been fit for purpose for some time, it’s time we had a rather uncomfortable conversation about how we go forward without it as it presently is.

Anybody who supports obesity is an enemy of humanity and nature in general. Obesity contributes to global warming/climate change. Stop obesity.
BMI is what it is. An index. It is like any index like PMI. Is PMI a good indicator for economic health? No. But it is an indicator nevertheless.

BMI is NOT a great measurement standard. It doesn't take bone and muscle density variations much to throw the whole thing off. Ex – I have high muscle density that makes me weigh heavier than what my size suggests.
@shawnwoodward4522
December 22, 2023 at 1:11 am
The BMI is used to classify your severity of eating disorder. If your BMI > 18.5, you prolly have bulimia and a change in eating habit would help, while < 18.5 means you would need inpatient hospitalisation for further examinations and nutritional rehabilitation. The doctors have their legit reason to ask you to go home

This exact thing happened to my daughter a couple of years ago. She wasn't overweight and I would tell her I loved her and she was beautiful inside and out every day. She said it didn't matter what I thought. This illness doesn't care.. after 6 years from age 8-14 she stopped eating and became withdrawn. At 5ft 3in and now dropped from 9st to just over 6st in 9 short months the school contacted me to see my gp as several staff were concerned. I was trying not to highlight it as a huge issue at the time and talk her round myself. Reluctantly I went and I saw a newly qualified young male doctor who looked her up and down several times, weighed her and said you're not in the anorexic weight category. Also were she to continue she would likely be lumped in group therapy with nut cases basically. We sat in the car and I said that's what help is out there. It's sink or swim. Later that day I held her in my arms and cried like a new born baby. I told her she's all that matters and was breaking my heart. I saw a light literally turn on behind her eyes. From that day on I involved her in selecting her favourite meals from our food shops and encouraged her all the way and we're two of the lucky ones, a year on she was a healthy weight once again, bouncing with confidence and full of life. I think it's made her so much stronger that nonsense from other children's underhand remarks could make her so sad and social media could make her so ill and depressed. Please show your children your raw love for them.. it saves lives on these crazy times ♡

Considering the NHS waiting list is as long a line for Primark, her voice could just encourage people to eat and treat their body sensibly. Try and avoid getting drawn into a self-obsessive state over how you look. Narcissism is the real problem not the BMI.
