Gillian Anderson on how to get into character | Master the Art | Bazaar UK
Gillian Anderson has had a career full of impressive roles – from the beloved Agent Scully in The X Files, to the memorable Stella Gibson in The Fall, a delightfully unhinged Miss Havisham in Great Expectations and the free-spirited Jean Milburn in Netflix’s Sex Education. But her latest role is arguably her most compelling. The actress plays Margaret Thatcher in season four of The Crown, joining Olivia Colman as the Queen, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, and Emma Corrin as Princess Diana.
“On the one hand it’s easier almost to play a real character,” Anderson tells us. “There’s often so much documentation and so it makes it easier to do research or hone in on things like clothes and voice, which can all help in building a character. But then there’s also the added pressure of people who have very strong opinions of the person that you’re playing.”
Here, Gillian Anderson talks us through her experience of stepping into Margaret Thatcher’s shoes in a masterclass in how to get into character.

Honestly, it was hard for me to not focus on the obvious lighting that popped up really fast on numerous occasions. For example, at 9:06, if you pause and go frame by frame, you can see it. One would think that by 2020, a professional company like Harper's Bazaar UK could do better before releasing it for the masses.
… unless they wanted to relive the X-Files and make you think you've seen an "incomprehensible phenomenon." (At least, that's a line I seem to remember her saying quite frequently a la Vizzini's "INCONCEIVABLE!" Of course, I was very young back then… gimme a break if it isn't.)

May I just say without starting a riot, I watch these interviews to hear the person's answers. She puts a lot of thought and time into her answers and does not deserve to be drowned out by piano music. It's a nice touch because she's in a bare room that echos a bit, but seriously, Somewhere around 7 min. in it was almost drowning her out. lucky for you it was Gillian Anderson or I'd have moved on.
