Gaza under siege as Israeli forces mass on border – BBC News

Published

on

Israel is continuing its massive mobilisation of hundreds of thousands of troops on the boundary with Gaza, ahead of a widely expected ground offensive into the territory.

The United Nations is calling for essential supplies to be allowed into Gaza, where the humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly, as Israel enforces a complete siege.

Gaza, which is home to more than two million people, is running short of power, food, water and medical supplies.

It follows the attack on Israel by Hamas militants who are now known to have killed at least 1,200 people in the assault.

It’s believed that Hamas are holding more than 100 hostages in Gaza, who were seized during the raids in Israel.

More than 1,400 have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched retaliatory air strikes.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by international editor Jeremy Bowen and Rushdi Abualouf in Gaza.

According to BBC logic, the British were not "proportionate" in their bombing of German cities in the second world war. More Germans were killed than Brits bombed by the Nazis. This makes Churchill a war criminal and the Nazis/Hamas “freedom fighters.”

You constantly talk about Palestine as a victim, you are not objective, how much are you paid to tell this false story, Gaza has suffered all these years from Hamas which steals money and resources from the people, does everything to destroy Israel. This is not in the best interest of the citizens, Israel gave many reasons for living together and did not start any war with Gaza, Israel has always defended itself against them and now this will be the end of them. Stop presenting it as something illegitimate, if you were being shot at 24 hours a day, you too would react without compassion to the other side – believe me, today I spoke to a Palestinian on Instagram, he says there will be peace only when all the Jews die. The Palestinian people want us dead, they choose death and we Israelis choose life. If you want peace and wish for the good of the Palestinians, either you will convince them that they should live with us in peace or you will adopt them to another country.

Bbc is a loud speaker for arabs and muslims, try to play a fair amount of video and audio from Israel and Palestine in this war. Tv is cluttered with news about Palestinians only. One billion 600 million hostile muslims and arabs against 6 million Israelis! How much video those 2 billion muslim population can produce a day? Throwing random rockets at Israel cities is done to kill innocents, it is a crime done by Palestinians, it is done for killing civilians in purpose, for years this evil act never be convicted by Arabs, muslims or even europeans. Stop these evil acts

This is not a religious war This is the occupation of oppressed I want to apologize to my oppressed Palestinian brothers. Today USA and UK and France and Germany and Italy and India. All the countries are united with Israel and are visiting their countries in war situations. And they are getting help in every way. But alas, alas, what happened to the Muslims, they are not helping their Muslim brothers. They are not giving a firm answer, nor has any Muslim leader visited Palestine yet. There should be humanity too. Oppression is happening on children, women, elders, everyone is silent. I am telling the people of the whole world that who has won in the oppression that is being done to children, women and the elderly. Stop the war. Tomorrow, all this will happen to us, similarly the world will be silent to which we are concerned. And this is not a religious war This is the occupation of the oppressed

UK confirms ban on extradition to Hong Kong as tension with China rises – BBC News

Published

on

In the latest evidence of growing tension between Britain and China the foreign secretary Dominic Raab has confirmed that the UK is suspending its extradition treaty with Hong Kong.

It’s in response to Beijing’s imposition of a new security law aimed at ending political protests in Hong Kong.

The UK has already offered residency rights to 3 million Hong Kong citizens but China has accused the UK of “brutal meddling” in its internal affairs.

In Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigners who fought against the introduction of the security law say they’re being pursued by the Chinese authorities.

Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting from Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg and from Danny Vincent in Hong Kong.

UK plan to send refugees to Rwanda is “cruel” and “immoral” say critics – BBC News

Published

on

Plans announced by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to send asylum seekers who arrive in the UK to Rwanda in Africa have been described as “chilling”, “cruel” and “immoral” by charities and politicians.

Boris Johnson said the £120m pilot scheme would “save countless lives”. He claimed it would break the business model of “vile people smugglers”.

The scheme would initially focus on single men arriving on boats or lorries in the UK. They would be sent on a 4,000-mile trip to Rwanda where they would be processed and, if granted asylum, be offered long-term accommodation in the African country.

The UK Home Secretary Priti Patel, who travelled to the Rwandan capital Kigali to sign the deal, said the “vast majority” of those arriving in the UK “illegally” would be considered for relocation to Rwanda.

More than 160 charities and campaign groups called on the UK government to abandon the plan, which they described as “shamefully cruel”, as well as unworkable and unlawful. The policy is expected to face legal challenge in the courts.

Other critics said the announcement was an attempt to distract from Boris Johnson’s political difficulties. It was unveiled shortly after he was found guilty of criminal conduct for breaking his own lockdown rules, with parties in Downing Street at the height of the Covid pandemic.

Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Home Editor Mark Easton, Jessica Parker in Dunkirk and political correspondent Helen Catt at Westminster.

Boris Johnson threatens to impose highest level Covid restrictions on Manchester – BBC News

Published

on

The Prime Minister has told the Mayor of Greater Manchester that he is prepared to intervene and impose the highest level of coronavirus restrictions on the region if they can’t reach an agreement.

The Mayor, Andy Burnham, is seeking a bigger package of financial support for businesses that would be forced to close as a result of the Tier 3 restrictions.

He has told Boris Johnson that local leaders are ready to meet the government at any time to seek agreement. Manchester has some of the highest levels of coronavirus transmission in the UK.

Meanwhile Lancashire has agreed to impose the highest restrictions, joining the Liverpool city region on Tier 3 — or Very High Alert.

It means no mixing between households indoors — or outdoors in certain settings including private gardens. Pubs and bars will close unless they serve a substantial meal. And people must avoid non-essential travel into or out of the area.

However there are some difference between Manchester and Liverpool, despite them both being placed at Tier 3. In Lancashire, unlike Liverpool, gyms and leisure centres won’t have to close but soft play centres and car boot sales will.

The Mayor of Liverpool says it’s “madness” to have different rules for Lancashire and he’s warned that it is “sowing confusion”.

Meanwhile people from areas of the UK with high levels of coronavirus – including Tier 2 in England – are now banned from entering Wales.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by deputy political editor Vicki Young, Judith Moritz in Lancashire and Wales correspondent Hywel Griffith.

Boris Johnson unveils tough new tiers for millions in England – BBC Newsnight

Published

on

55 million people across England will be in the two toughest levels of measures when lockdown ends next week. What’s the rationale for the new tier system? Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog

Tougher rules for England will “strike a balance” when the national lockdown ends next week, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said.

At a Downing Street briefing, the prime minister acknowledged that the stricter three-tiered system of regional measures to tackle coronavirus would bring “heartbreak and frustration”.

Most of England will be in the toughest two levels of measures from 2 December and the system will be reviewed every two weeks, with the first review scheduled for 16 December – so an area’s tier level may change before Christmas.

Policy Editor Lewis Goodall reports and Kirsty Wark is joined by former health secretary Andrew Lansley, Labour shadow minister Cat Smith and former chair of Pizza Express Luke Johnson
