Michaela Coel on how to tell a story | Master the Art | Bazaar UK
Michaela Coel created art from trauma in her hit series ‘I May Destroy You’, which captivated audiences across the globe when it was released back in June. In a month when Black Lives Matter demonstrations took place across the globe, the talented polymath fictionalised her own experience of sexual assault for the arresting series.
Her debut sitcom, Chewing Gum, ran from 2015 to 2017 and was based on her 2012 graduate play, Chewing Gum Dreams, and won her a BAFTA for Best Comedy Actress.
In the latest instalment of our new ‘Master the Art’ series, Coel shares an insight into her creative writing process.
“I can only tell you things that I have done that have helped me tell stories. I have Googled, ‘how to write TV show’. I highly recommend doing that. There is a lot of information there.”

When all else fails, "As a youngster my favorites (BOOKS & MOVIES) were adventures, I loved reading about faraway places & strange people, and wishing I'd hurry and grow up so to see them in person and guess what, I done it. 😉
One thing I like was books that always had us (Black-people) begging, wining, and pleading with White folks to like us; and those where we were always in the position of being the jokers or entertainers ie; singing & dancing. I mean it’s ok, but at a certain age, I became aware of other accomplishment my race had achieved, which gave me a new outlook on life & goals to pursuit all praise’s to a Mr. Ross, a Pullman-porter who gave me a memoir of the famous explorer Matthew Henson, on my ninth (9) birthday, which open the door to the life I’ve lived.

Now, 70 plus years later I’m sharing some of my life experiences, in hope of inspiring others to think and venture outside of their boxes and experience the the feeling of ENTITLEMENTS; like some were with or taught soon after birth.
