Why does Japan have so few children? – BBC News
Japan’s number of children has been reported to be at its lowest since 1950.
There are just 14.6 million children in the nation under the age of 14, according to figures from Japan’s internal affairs ministry.
Japan’s falling birth rate and high life expectancy is putting pressure on public spending and resulting in labour shortages.
The BBC’s population correspondent Stephanie Hegarty reports.

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.
In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.
He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.
Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.
Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.
The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.
It comes after another night of strikes between the US and Iran, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it hit two UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and targeted US facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.
The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.
Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.
Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.
President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.

as a japanese hs student, i’m scared of my future. i don’t want kids because i’m going to b expected to take care of them + do household chores yet still have to work. my mom did so much of domestic work and my dad did literally nothing. so yeah, i’d understand why japan is suffering from ageing population lmao

Why would anyone want to have children if the mother has almost zero chance of getting back into their field of specialities after giving birth? Vast majority of women in Japan have university degrees and establish their professional success despite still a very much male-dominant society. Then it gets snatched away in an instance just because you get pregnant. Unless the mentality and social support change and true vision for women to succeed flourishes, less and less women will want to have children. No brainer.

No, not work stress, etc- it's because of the social problems themselves. People keep saying its financial instability- 50%, but the other 50% is to do with how consumeristic and brutal the young generation is. Their sociability is a hive minded culture. So when you can't achieve these standards, Japan is brutal in that regards about dropping you like a hot pot… Japanese people also don't show kindness too.

I heard there is a problem (not the right work – maybe situation instead) with to many elders and too less births. I don't really know why this happens and if one of the reasons is actually that women want to work instead of taking care of children. But if this is the biggest problem why not make a win win situation out of it. Create a system where old people (that are still fit and able to take care) take care of babies and children. I heard that Japan has special work opportunities for old people. They could build upon that and could give some adavantages for old people that take care of children and create some special jobs for them related to children which are also affordable for families. Maybe more people would want to have children if they knew they could still go to work because someone will take care of them. Mabye that's not the resolution to all of the problems, but it would be a beginning. In the end it's more of a personal thing. Do I want old people to take care of my children? Can I teach my children to be respectful to elders and not be to demanding? If this happened it would shape a whole generation. It's just an outsiders perspective, so I don't know if this would work and if this is even the problem to begin with, just a thought I had…
