The Federal model may appear attractive has a major drawback – it would mean yet another bunch of freeloaders living off the public purse and no lessening of the uncivil servants in London – they just won't relocate, so perhaps you have a federated Lancashire (for example) being staffed by the uncivils WFH in Surrey, along with the Combined Authorities such as Manchester WFH in Bootle. Just how much government does a small country need ?

The SNP under Salmond's stewardship was quite dynamic, then under Sturgeon they keep going up extremely unpopular cut-de-sacs such as gender self identification. Add to that the fact that parties lose elections rather than win them you have an idea of the SNPs predicament.

  19. @jontalbot1

    December 18, 2023 at 8:17 am

A few observations. First, all national projects fall apart because it is not a coherent ideology. Second, people tire of all governing parties and in democracies vote them out. Neither of these specifically SNP. Then there is the rise of the Labour Party nationally. Most Scots are happier with a Labour rather than Tory government so with the prospect of power Scots will vote for them. The decline of the SNP has not benefitted the Tories.

As a foreigner living in Scotland, SNP needs to go.

  23. @patrickparsons2378

    December 18, 2023 at 8:17 am

It is much simpler. Sturgeon's arrogance and corruption, the Green alliance of Harvie's perversions and hypocrisy, and Humza's criminal incompetency and stupidity (and his open racism) have killed the SNP. The SNP is simply not for ordinary Scots anymore, if it ever was. It is now what it was before Alex Salmond: a fringe party of fantasists, fanatics and sexual deviants. I voted SNP for much if my adult life, but never ever again. I voted for independence in 2014, but never ever again. The SNP and their independence myth are dangerous distractions from governing Scotland for the people not for a cabal of criminals and deluded fools.

  27. @Dabhach1

    December 18, 2023 at 8:17 am

This is rubbish from the first minute. Sturgeon did not bring the SNP to the commanding heights, Alex Salmond did — Sturgeon just inherited it, then peed it up against the wall. The SNP is now the Establishment in Scotland, and as such it has been taken over by the same incoming political grifters who populate Labour. That’s what's killing the party. Sturgeon was a lifelong political apparachik from the age og 16. She's never been anywhere, and she's never done anything. She has no life experience, so she never recognized the poison these people bring.

  28. @davidaitken271

    Him for one

  29. @Cab00se90

    December 18, 2023 at 8:17 am

The SNP’s success is a symptom of Scottish discontent with the democratic deficit at Westminster and an astute realisation, by the party, that Labour do not align with the broadly left-wing views of many Scots, particularly in the central belt.

Brexit bolstered the party and continues to do so but a quagmire of economic issues and problems with internal discipline has made them look weak. But, I still doubt Labour will win major gains because most SNP voters don’t trust Starmer and they hate the Tories and the Lib Dems (bc of the coalition).

    December 18, 2023 at 8:17 am

The thing is….Labour is a dead party here and the Conservatives are hated worse than poison. Brexit has made sure there will be another independence vote….the sooner the better!

  35. @johnthomson6507

    December 18, 2023 at 8:17 am

They went from 56mps to 35 hardly a small loss. Independence for me has become like a religion. I don't think I'm unique. Despite the mainly perceived problems in the party. The buckets of manure chucked at the snp ms sturgeon mr morrell and the treasury. Any charges are highly unlikely. The party will loose mps from 44 down to 38 to 42 seats. However the Labour party is like the tories an English party. Independence is guaranteed demographically. I fear Labour will crap on Scotland and scots big time. Making it again a very unpleasant period in Scottish and British history.

  36. @KiltBill2

    December 18, 2023 at 8:17 am

The "Hate Crime Bill" which makes it illegal to know the difference between men and women in Scotland.

  37. @thomasreilly6362

    December 18, 2023 at 8:17 am

The SNP Trump card is Starmer. As long as he keeps on about not rejoining the EU. The SNP can finally breakfree from Westminster and the millstone that England is. The by-election in a few weeks time will be a test. The gender Bill was supported by all the parties in Scotland. More lazy journalism 😴 Get out and get back in the EU
