Inside England’s second most deprived area – BBC Newsnight
Newsnight is following a community in Knowsley on Merseyside over the next five months to see how people are affected by the cost-of-living crisis. The area is one of the most deprived in the country, with over 25% of children living in low-income households.
Victoria Derbyshire meets Steph Cargill, a single mother of two who works part time and struggles to pay her bills. Some months she gets down to her last pound. She’d like to work full time but wouldn’t be able to afford the childcare required.
36-year-old Gary See runs the local community centre which serves hot meals for free to those who need them and runs a heavily discounted ‘social supermarket’ providing kitchen staples at discounted prices. He drives his van to deliver essentials to those in need – from food parcels to electric blankets.
He tells Newsnight that one mother, whose child had attended activities at the centre, told him she was happy because her children were able to get washed there.

Counter terrorism police now leading investigation into Ann Widdecombe’s death | BBC News
Counter terrorism police are now leading the investigation into the death of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe, after “new information and evidence has come to light”, Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) has said.
“The police are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. I will be updating the House further this afternoon,” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said.
A 28-year-old white British man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was originally arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday but has now been re-arrested “on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism”, CTPSE said.
Police said the “dynamic and complex investigation” had led to the new arrest.
On Thursday, 78-year-old Widdecombe was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, having sustained serious injuries.

Sir Keir Starmer is fighting to stay on as prime minister as the pressure mounts | BBC News
Three members of his government, including Home Office minister Jess Phillips, have resigned, whilst scores of Labour MPs are calling for him to quit following a disastrous set of elections for the party last week.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among a number of cabinet ministers urging the prime minister to set out a departure timetable.
Sir Keir said he does not intend to quit and threw down the gauntlet to potential rivals to formally challenge him as Labour leader.
No MP has yet launched a formal bid to challenge him, which requires the backing of 81 colleagues or 20% of Labour MPs, according to party rules.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News
The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.
In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News
President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.
He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.
Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.
Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.
The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

Their homes are really in good conditions and look nice, I say this not to underplay their struggle but to compare to the condition of council homes in and around london that are riddled with black mould and damp and structural problems, on top of the money worries, I think it must make a bit of a difference to have a home that you can still call your sanctuary albeit the money worries are still there and very real.

Where is the man .?in almost all these accounts..and investigations ,male abdication and irresponsibility is not mentioned..we live in an amoral and godless society led and promoted by the media, political class, commercial sector, in short the metropolitan middle class, privately educated and/or university educated who believe nothing beyond themselves and occupy a hypocritical, anti religious ,elitist mind set..they are many lost souls bent on final destruction…I am nearly 80 yrs a Catholic , and have witnessed the almost utter disintegration of this country and the corruption of thought ,values, standards ,and outlook. .and the poisoning of life generally…there will,I repeat be a reckoning and an account to pay for us all

Could somebody please explain to my what causes the deprivation in this area? I'm planning to relocate to St.Helens which is also in the Merseyside area, properties are very cheap there, and seemingly wages aren't much lower compared to where I live now in Bedford. So what causes the issues in that area? When I go on rightmove I see a lot of houses are being sold, mostly primary inhabited by old people.

The cost of living is out of control. They say that the cost of living in the USA increased by 8%, but that percentage is a lot less than it really is in reality. I think that the cost of living has increased by 40% in the last ten years. The cost of food, housing, and fuel in the USA is so expensive that many people have to decide whether they are going to pay their electric bill or buy food. The situation is sad in the USA. I don't know how low-income people are surviving.

Just think of how much money is spent housing the dinghy travellers.
When i retired i moved to Germany to live next door to my brother. Here you pay nursery fees according to your income. The max monthly fee my nephew and his wife paid for my great nieces was a maximum of 350 euros a month for each and that included lunch and mid morning and afternoon juice and fruit. My nephew and his wife were and are both on very good salaries.

YOU want TRUTH real hard actual fact truth!!!! It’s greed pure and simple rising energy and rent prices is purely and only greed it’s absolutely the rich get rich (through stealing from the poor) and everyone else submits to it- they as a nation and any nation that continues to oppress and restrict the lives of others have a karma to pay. Perhaps when Pluto (death, karma) slams into Aquarius (groups, government, nations group think) = I heard Russia is using nuclear weapons. Well that’s your karma!!!! And anyone who believes oppressing another is ok will beyond feel Pluto.

sitting on leather settees wearing designer clothes with 70inch LCD TVs on the wall and a fully equipped fitted kitchen and a BMW on the driveway, it's a tough old life isn't it, these people couldn't spell deprived, I grew up in a house with no TV, No Fridge, No carpets, No heating, only one pair of wellies, often no coal for the fire so we would saw up old wood from abandoned houses, often no food for a couple of days waiting for the Giro to arrive, ticking on at the local Hadrian store and the local chippy, going out during the night to steal milk off doorsteps with everyone waiting for a cuppa back home in the morning, people are living in luxury now and think because they haven't got ££1000s in the bank they are poor,
