War in Ukraine: What it’s like defending Avdiivka against Russian attacks – BBC Newsnight

Published

on

Russia has been attempting to encircle the eastern Ukraine town of Avdiivka and has been repeatedly attacking it for over a month.

The town retains its reputation as a stronghold just beyond occupied Donetsk, but some fear it will soon follow the same fate as Bakhmut, which has been almost completely destroyed.

Jack Losh has spoken to some locals to see how they’re doing and to find out what winter could bring for the Ukrainian Eastern flank.

Russia spends 300 million dollars a day on military operations in Ukraine, Ukraine 100 million dollars + restoration of destroyed facilities. Ukraine needs $300 million a day. The European Union must commit to providing Ukraine with $300 million a day, or approximately $100 billion a year, for at least the next three years. If the European Union cannot provide the necessary assistance to Ukraine, then what is the point of pretending to support Ukraine. We need to come together and make a peace treaty. In addition, there is a possibility that Europe may see dissatisfied Ukrainians on its territory riding Western armored vehicles in alliance with Russia.

The Free Russian Foundation is an organization that, with the money of American taxpayers, supports anti-Russian sentiments. One of the structures is engaged in generating messages on the Internet that are directed against Russia. Live bots write up to 160,000 messages per month. There are probably also software ones, but nothing is known about them yet. Is this called “freedom of speech” and “democracy”?

You made a mistake in the news headline. Ukraine is the aggressor who attacked the city of Avdeevka, Donetsk Republic. Russia protects Donetsk from Ukrainian aggression.

  6. @sergeysergeev7564

    December 17, 2023 at 4:06 am

Avdeevka is a city in the Republic of Donbass. This is not Ukraine.

It was Ukraine that attacked him.

In 2014, Ukraine attacked two republics, Lugansk and Donetsk.

It is Ukraine that is the aggressor, and Russia is protecting these lands from the Ukrainian invasion!

There are many ways to interpret the battlefield situation. If Russia really had lost so many manpower, a social revolt in Russia would be inevitable. But Russia stays rock solid. Something is not stacking up.
Avdiivka can be "a stronghold defended by Ukraine", but by the flip of the coin, we can also call it a cauldron set up by the Russian force. Whichever you would believe.

Before 2022 news were talking about Russia taking Crimea, now it says that Russia took Donetsk in 2014 too, why was it not talked about before 2022? then it was about Ukraine separatist regions.
More so Minsk 1 and 2 agreements, would be proof that Russia has not taken Donbass regions.
Seems like a try to rewrite history. Good thing whatever was on internet stays on internet, so anyone can read what was written between 2014 and 2022.

The whole world knows that there's a media blackout in Ukraine. Therefore, Ukraine is trying to paint a different picture otherwise they will lose western support. Ukrainians stand no chance against a superior force in the form of Russia. Sorry, it's bad news for you. And please verify the allegations you make. Otherwise I, you're just feeding us with fiction.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.

It comes after another night of strikes between the US and Iran, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it hit two UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and targeted US facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.

The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.

Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
