Is Rishi Sunak close to a deal on the Northern Ireland protocol? – BBC Newsnight
Attempts to break the impasse over the Northern Ireland protocol – the deal covering trade with the EU and Great Britain – have been described by the Democratic Unionists as “hopeful” and by Sinn Fein as “very positive”.
There’s a lot riding on it – not just the possibility of getting devolved government back up and running in Northern Ireland, but also changing the wider political atmosphere with the European Union.
Billions in science funding, for example, are being held back by the EU while the Northern Ireland protocol issue remains blocked. That’s just one example how both the government and Labour’s aspirations to make Brexit work better depend on a solution.

If she comes into the office of the chief executive of our national sovereignty and attempts to subvert our sovereignty by imposing her constituency's domineering political agenda over our national life she should be shown the door. No, and none of you ever will, Tory or Labour. The reality is Brexit made it clear to the rest of the British Isles (and the world) just how reckless and self-centered the English are — and just how little they give a fig about any country that isn’t England. That very much includes Scotland and Ireland.
Perhaps this time, the Scots will vote in favor of an independence referendum, and Ireland will finally reunite. Considering that England has completely tanked the British economy and destroyed the NHS (perhaps irreparably), and that the Tories continue to fail the People year after year, there’s really only one question left: why TF would ANYONE even want to remain in the UK?
I foresaw it the moment the word “Brexit” was first bandied about: the true demise of the UK. And it makes me so damn sad.
