Food poverty: ‘I miss meals so my children can eat’ – BBC Newsnight
Data shared with Newsnight exclusively by the Food Foundation suggests more than a quarter of UK households with children experienced food poverty last month – meaning they reduced what they ate, or skipped meals altogether. The charity says as the cost of living bites it has detected an alarming rise in cases.
Upon seeing the findings the former Children’s Commissioner told us the scale of deprivation is now a national emergency. A government spokesperson says its priority is always to support the most vulnerable and millions of households have been offered help with rising bills.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News
The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.
In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News
President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.
He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.
Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.
Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.
The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.
Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News
The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.
Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.
President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.

Back in 2009 I was struggling, lost my job and couldn't afford to live, because it was less people that got affected, nobody gave a sh*t about me, now 14 years later things have turned around, I'm doing good and I'm not struggling because I future proofed myself as I knew no one will help me. Winters are no issue and I can have my heating on as much as I need. Funny also that those who wouldn't help me 14 years ago are struggling now and no one is really helping them. What goes around comes around and I don't care anymore if people call me allsorts 😃

What BS anti tory propaganda
….poverty in England and rest of UK has been epidemic since Harold Wilson days of Labour Goverment…care home abuse..child abuse..treating ex military LIKE a piece of ShiiT on housing lists..whilst pregnant Chav lazy women on sink housing estates got priority…
Poverty wages under Blair..Jim Callaghan..Dennis Healey as Labour Party Chancellor of Exchequer
In 1968 skilled engineer precision Machinist craftsmens wage was £1 an hour…around Manchester .((.4Star petrol 34 old pence a gallon era)).. Liverpool North West
In 1998 wages for same jobs was £6 an hour gross pay
Labour Party encouraged people to stay on Dole and milk benefits.
Wilson government sabotaged engineering jobs ..thousands made unemployed…look at TSR2 fighter plane project they sabotaged.
Too many students and university deadbeat demonstrators causing BS trouble in idiot London marches.. always crying over Tory Rule….I've lived under SHIIT Labour governments..and life was craap
…Life is craap now in London..everyday 5th COLOUMIST subversive students demonstrating clogging up roads & ECO NAZI'S…..gangs of Commie Marxist "Socialist Worker" Nutters (who never work)

I noticed when shopping yesterday that meat food prices had increased again.
35p for a banana at tesco So 3 costs £1.05
Got a big bunch about 9 for £1.10 at the farm stall in the market.
There was a notice posted on Facebook about government cutting free meals for children.
Especially at the present cost of living crisis.
My son a teacher told me that mid morning break kids are offered snacks. Some kids being hungry buy the snacks because they are hungry
but then have no money for a school dinner.
Jamie my son has been helping a few kids as he knows there backgrounds and feels it's wrong to stand by and let kids not be able to have food.
Free milk was cut out at junior primary years ago… Remember Maggie thatcher milk snatcher?
I suspect so many families qualifying for free meals has increased the cost.
We need the local councils to support free school meals.
and give them the help they give to incoming migrants
I posted a comment on Facebook in response to comments about children going hungry compared to MPs meals.
Very Big response.
I knew in past the MPs meals were subsidised and apparently still are. Someone posted the luxurious menu from the restaurant in houses of Parliament.
Other comments about the expenses they can claim. So possibly they can claim food and drink expenses too?
I read cabinet making decisions without consulting MPs.
There has been a suggestion put forward that anyone over 75 should not have the right to vote. and new proposals that Pensioners should pay national insurance. Is this directed at people who paid into private pension schemes. ?
and therefore have a living income.
Our UK state pension is one of the lowest in Europe.
Gordon Brown when he became Prime Minister said quote
" there are now too many folk in Britain for all to expect an old age pension
the cake can only be cut so many ways,
and the old age pension will gradually be phased out"

I had a pink sea creature on my energy bill ,my direct debit always had a surplus ,looking at the bills they kept estimating them despite accurate readings [ old style meters ] , i complained twice that ended up in being sent compound billing ,this where they have a system of reverse billing & queantine & some thing else i cant remenber the result of this is a bill or bills you cant understand they have things like 2 sections fore electric where in one column they have 14 enries all for the same day & date the gas had fewer days & dates they will have 30 days of standing charges in one section of the bill and 50 days in the other & charge for both one bill came to £470 & change i did the maths and got them to send me another bill for £216 after a yr of phone calls of just trying to pay for what i use i gave up & left and went to the Ombudsman ,Shock number 2 the female advisor said sometimes its better to walk away and just leave it . I persisted the bcase depended on my actual readings but they only wanted the first & last readings for a 3 month period .
So i looked futher into the ombudsman as it turns out the Ombudsman give the Enery companies the 1st 3 complaints for free ,on the 4th complaint they charge them appx £750 to investigate the complaint . it turns out that its still cheaper for the company to go to mediation than it is to go to court where the problem will be in the public gaze and the papers .
They will come up with anything but the underlying irem is they are estimating your bills on a regular basis to get their cash up ,i can only speak for the old strle meters but i was told it is company policy to estimate everybodies bill at least 3 times a year ,Energy companies will say we have to esrimate on April the first for market pricing ,April the 1st is the end of the old financial year and the start of the new one it has nothing to do with market pricing
But everything to do with the companies financial standing
If a company had just 1 million customers and over estimated their customers bills by just £10 they have an extra £10 million to invest for 1 month and of course to get the interest on .
No one is going to an investigation into this because the money is big & the government dont want to know because it raxes the company on its profits and those profits are enormous .
What you can do is to pay your bill via paper billing ,read your meters on the 29th or the 30th of the month and check just how many days of standing charges they are charging you for .
If you go to the ombudsman and take out a complaint the energy company may call you up and try to talk you into or out of something DO NOT TALK TO THEM ,they offered to scrap my last bill ,all the other bills we for larger ammounts the last one was for £120 ,I said no
I just wanted them to stop over charging me and causing me stress the only time they did was when i left and took out the complaint .
They get a lot of complaints so will be paying the ombudsman the £750 they charge for every complaint , win loose or draw i will happy with that alone !

Its not about the money its about the inability of people to live within their means and keep track of their money spending habits, i know alot of people who buy new phones go on holiday two – three times a year and they never "have any money! i wonder why.

Politicians should get higher wages. And taxes are too low, workers should pay more tax on everything. The cost of food will help reduce related illness from over eating or from consuming unhealthy foods. Put a blanket around yourself and turn off the heating, save the environment. Your lazy and don't want to work. These are just some of the points middle and upper class people raise. It's your fault for not doing anything to help yourself. I think it's going to go bang…people have had enough. But British don't have the balls is what the ruling classes are relying on..

Dear UK citizens and residents, please move to Republic of Korea (South Korea)! We have amazing hot meals for children in schools, a lot of universities offer great lunch on the ridiculously lower price, plus as foreigners you can apply to scholarships to study in the universities outside of Seoul area. There are many jobs in the IT, retail, entertainment industry, factories, service sectors, education sector. My country suffers from thr lowest birthrate and we all worry about our future! We need more foreigners to come and settle down in Korea.

That’s what we need, an affirmative hire rich white women who has never solved anything in her life giving everyone lectures. They’re the reason why this country is going to the dogs. Don’t get me started on single mothers, a worldwide trend started by white women, having their children out of wedlock then expecting everyone to bare the burden of their sex life and wrong choices in life. Have some individual responsibility.
