Why is UK death rate among highest in world? – BBC News
Why have there been more than 100,000 Covid deaths in the UK – the most in Europe – and among the highest in the world?
The coronavirus was first detected in the city of Wuhan in China a little over a year ago in late 2019.
The outbreak spread quickly across the world in the first months of 2020 and was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation on the 11th March.
So why is the UK’s death toll among the worst in the world? Why is it one of the countries that has been hit by the pandemic so much harder than others?
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by science editor David Shukman.

Saudi nationals killed as Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen step up airport attacks | BBC News
Saudi Arabia has said three people have been killed after the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen attacked Riyadh airport on Thursday.
It’s the latest in series of attacks on airports across the country, as the conflict escalates between Saudi-supported Yemeni government forces and the Houthis.
Elsewhere a US Treasury official has told the BBC that economic pressure from America has Tehran ‘on its knees’, and they hope the tactic will end the current regime in Iran.
Meanwhile Iran’s president has said his country will not walk away from peace negotiations, despite threats from the United States.

Margaret Atwood on gender, women’s rights, and Roald Dahl revisions – BBC News
Booker prize winner Margaret Atwood describes herself as an “observer,” but in her many novels she has often offered us a portal to understanding, be it about totalitarianism, or the idea of other forms of life, future and past.
In her latest book, Old Babes in the Woods, she navigates death and the loss of loved ones, in short stories which are both acerbic and hilarious, as well as adding to her fantastical oeuvre, such as an octopus-like creature narrating its own interpretation of a folk tale.
Seven of the stories feature the characters Tig and Nell, a thinly-veiled portrayal of Atwood and her long-life partner Graeme Gibson who died four years ago. Margaret Atwood began her interview with Kirsty Wark with a reading from the darkly funny story, Widows.

Jabs and a shut down NHS. I wouldn't trust a mask to keep saw dust out. 😂🙄 The sooner the culprits are arrested the better. All involved need to go on trial. That includes the complicit within this organisation.

It’s high because of the ‘death within 28 days of a positive test’ and also the PCR test can’t tell the difference between normal flu and Covid. It’s that simple. Pure corruption. Is everyone ready for the lock down in October?

Maybe because they told the chinese with British passports to come live there if it’s got virus overload ,persons terrified to leave China ,or just because the weather is wet and foggy a lot. to keep virus in the air . Praying for the people .

The reason that the UK has one of the highest numbers of deaths and is because since 2016 it has become a country run on absolutely nothing but populist hype … The government constantly play the ludicrous patriotism card and BoJo is working hard at his Churchill impression …. Brexit is the biggest mistake since the UK was dragged into WW1 by the 'Entente Cordial' …. The UK is a tiny island which is busy fracturing into it's constituent parts … It is NOT an empire, it is NOT a global power and it is most definitely even more bankrupt now than it was in 1976 when the IMF stepped in to save it.
Yet still the Brexit voting type stand about like 1 o'clock half struck, dithering and puking their nonsensical drivel on social media.

Taiwan, population 23 million, since march 2020 no lock downs at all, borders airports, shut from.day 1. Masks worn soon as they leave there front doors. Police and army policing social distance. 9 dead in 12 months. Now look at what our goverment as done last 12 months !!
@KidCrayon
January 5, 2024 at 12:09 pm
Remember when the bbc said that you can test positive. Be treated. There get run over by a bus 6 months later and it would count as a covid death ….. probably why our numbers are higher
