Ukraine frontline: Soldiers dig trenches under fear of Russian snipers | BBC Newsnight
The BBC has been given rare access to the Ukrainian soldiers digging trenches on the frontline of the war.
Here, soldiers live under constant threat of Russian snipers and shelling.
In BBC Newsnight’s final film with Ukraine’s 24th Mechanised Brigade, injured soldiers share their hopes as they retrain to join the war, while those on the frontline discuss when they think fighting will end.

A Russian drone hit an apartment block in Romania causing a fire and wounding two people, officials say.
The incident happened on Friday in the town of Galati – close to Romania’s eastern border with Ukraine and Moldova.
Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte said “Russia’s reckless behaviour is a danger to us all”, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia’s “war of aggression had crossed yet another line”.
Russian drones have strayed across Romania’s border a number of times during the four-year war with Ukraine, but it is the first time citizens from the Nato country have been hurt. Russia has yet to comment on the incident.

The statement was made in an interview published on the 9th of this month and conducted by Godfrey Bloom, a British independent specialist financial economist, author, YouTuber and former member of the European Parliament.
"Practically nothing can be said, nothing can happen, no action can be taken within the borders of Ukraine without the Russians knowing, without the Russians detecting. And if they know and detect it, they can also target it. […] what is happening now, what has happened within the last 24 or 48 hours in Ukraine – about 30 miles [48 kilometers] behind the Ukrainian front lines – was the destruction of a group of Ukrainian soldiers, a few hundred of them, along with instructors from US and UK NATO. They were all killed in one attack. You can't move in that country without being detected," the former officer said.

Serious question for Ukraine, if Ukrainians hate Russians and Russian culture, and see themselves as genetically different from them, why are they so eagerly fighting and dying trying to recapture historical Russian land and cities with a majority Russian population that, according to them never even shared a common culture with Ukraine in the first place? Why would the Crimean residents ever tolerate the Ukrainian government if it does fall back into Zelenskyy hand? They caused a man made drought there for 9 years, affecting millions of innocent civilians. forced deportation is bound to happen if Ukraine ever reclaims control. If those areas wanted to be liberated by Banderites, the western media would be salivating at the mouth to report on mass uprisings and Insurgency in the annexed regions, instead there is more patriotism and renovating happening in the new land then ever before thanks to Putin.
