Why is America running out of execution drugs? | The Global Story podcast

Published

on

Last week, Tennessee attempted to carry out the execution of Christa Pike, a convicted murderer who had spent three decades on death row. But the execution did not go as planned: After she was injected with two lethal doses of pentobarbital, Pike remained alive. She was then taken to hospital by ambulance.

This isn’t the first time an American execution hasn’t gone as planned. One reason is that the drugs needed for lethal injection have become increasingly difficult for US prison officials to obtain. Pharmaceutical companies don’t want their medicines used in executions — particularly manufacturers in Europe, where governments have opposed the death penalty for decades.

So, without access to regulated drugs, American prisons have had to improvise — sometimes with horrifying results.

The Global Story’s Tristan Redman speaks with investigative reporter Livvy Haydock about the consequences when the pharmaceutical supply chain refuses to feed the machinery of American executions.

Christa Pike ‘conscious and speaking’ after failed execution, lawyers say | BBC News

Published

on

US death row inmate Christa Pike is “conscious and speaking” after surviving a failed execution attempt in the state of Tennessee last week, her lawyers say.

Pike, 50, continues to receive critical medical care while handcuffed in hospital, according to a statement from her attorneys on Tuesday.

She was sentenced to death following her conviction for murdering Colleen Slemmer in 1995. But Pike survived two lethal injections last Wednesday and was transferred to a hospital in Nashville for treatment, where she remained unconscious while medical staff cleared her body of the injected pentobarbital.

An anaesthesiologist advising Pike’s defence team said her survival is highly unusual.

US pulls bombers from UK air base after suspected terror plot | BBC News

Published

on

The US has withdrawn all its bombers aircraft stationed at RAF Fairford in the UK following an alleged terror plot to target the facility. Washington has ben using the airfield to launch strikes on Iran, including deploying the B-1 strategic bomber.

In a statement the Pentagon said: “We can acknowledge now that all US bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have redeployed to their home stations in the United States.”

The withdrawal of a dozen B-1 strategic aircraft comes after British counter-terrorism police arrested six suspects in connection with a planned attack on the base that US and British officials said was disrupted last Sunday.

Police initially detained five British men near RAF Fairford after three suspicious vans were reported nearby. The suspects were released on police bail while remaining under investigation. Ccounterterrorism officers then arrested a 25-year-old dual British-Iranian citizen on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts linked to the incident. He has also been released on bail while inquiries continue.

The US President Donald Trump has said a planned attack was intended to do “big damage” and claimed that suspects were under investigation by both US and British authorities. Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that his country handed Britain intelligence about the suspected terror plot.

The British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications” pointing to Iranian involvement in the incident near the airbase, although he stressed that the police investigation remained ongoing. Iran has denied any connection to an alleged terror operation.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Tom Symonds.
