Deadly Russian attack on shopping mall – 15 dead and 130 injured in double drone strike | BBC News

Published

on

At least 15 people have been killed in two Russian drone strikes on a shopping centre in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, according to local officials have said.

Another 130 people – including 23 children – were injured in the city’s biggest mall.

The shopping mall is in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s home town. He called it “absolutely cynical and despicable”. Ukrainian authorities said a second drone struck the building, targeting emergency workers at the scene.

Dramatic footage verified by the BBC appears to show the second drone hitting the burning shopping centre in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Ukraine has in recent months carried out attacks on warehouses of Russia’s largest online retailer Wildberries.

Its latest strikes targeted an oil refinery and a military airfield deep inside Russia. Ukraine has been systematically targeting Russia’s energy supplies, leading to severe petrol shortages. Russia’s President Putin has admitted the attacks are damaging the country’s economy.

Russia warns of growing tension as UK hands Ukraine long-range missile blueprints | BBC News

Published

on

Russia is warning of increasing tension with the UK, following its decision to give Ukraine blueprints to build more effective long-range missiles.

The British Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited Kyiv, on the anniversary of its independence from the former Soviet Union, to had over the previously classified details of components used to construct cruise missiles. The information will help Ukraine manufacture its own versions of the Storm Shadow missile.

Mr Burnham compared Ukraine’s fight against Russia to the battle to defeat Nazi Germany, and pledged continuing British support.

President Putin’s spokesman Dmity Peskov said the UK was involved in the war on the side of Ukraine. He said British actions were adding “fuel to the fire” and accused the UK of deliberately sabotaging any progress towards a peace settlement.

Canada says it will match US tariffs ‘dollar for dollar’ as trade talks break down | BBC News

Published

on

A fresh wave of US tariffs on a wide array of Canadian goods came into effect on Saturday after a last-minute breakdown in trade talks.

Announcing the suspension of negotiations shortly before the Friday night deadline, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he would impose reciprocal tariffs on US goods “dollar for dollar” and that “last-minute changes in the US proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal”.

US President Donald Trump had temporarily paused those tariffs earlier in the week, saying the two sides were close to signing a trade deal that was “very good” for both countries.

But minutes before the deadline for a deal, Carney said that while “important progress” had been made in the talks it was “not enough to meet our objectives for Canadians”.

Sacked Ukraine defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov calls for presidential election | BBC News

Published

on

The former Ukraine defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov has told the BBC he stands by his call for nationwide elections even though the country is at war.

Fedorov, a popular minister who modernised the military and pioneered drone warfare, was fired last month after reportedly falling out with the head of Ukraine’s armed forces.

In a video released online earlier in the week, he said “democracy should not be the hostage of Putin” and accused individuals in the government of corruption.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he believes wartime elections would currently be too dangerous for Ukraine in remarks released on Sunday.

El Niño set to be ‘strongest in living memory’, says Met Office | BBC News

Published

on

The El Niño event that is developing over the Pacific Ocean is likely to be the strongest in living memory, the Met Office has warned.

The powerful natural climate phenomenon pushes up global temperatures and can increase the risks of extreme weather.

Added to the effects of human-induced climate change, the Met Office is warning that it is “very likely” to mean 2027 is the hottest year on record globally.

There is growing evidence that weather patterns around the world are already being affected, with below-average monsoon rains in India and suppressed hurricane activity in the Atlantic Ocean.
