Is Modi ‘weakened’ by India’s cockroach protests? | BBC News
The recent youth-led protests have weakened Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi “terribly”, says leading activist Sonam Wangchuk whose hunger strike galvanised the movement.
Wangchuk told the BBC that the atmosphere in the country had changed following mass demonstrations which triggered the resignation of the education minister on 25 July.
Young people now have more confidence they can “change things if they want to” and feel they don’t have to “take everything lying down”, the 59-year-old said.
The “cockroach” movement mounted one of the biggest public displays of dissent against Modi’s government, which has been in power since 2014.
The movement takes its name from a remark by India’s chief justice, who drew criticism after comparing sections of unemployed young people to “cockroaches” during a court hearing.
Wangchuk fasted in scorching heat in the capital, Delhi, for 26 days in June and July, consuming only salt and water. He says he has now regained six of the 11kg he lost.
The activist was forcibly taken to hospitals which he says were “more like prisons” for the final six days of his fast.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned the day after Wangchuk ended his hunger strike.

Why has US President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Oman? | BBC Newscast
Donald Trump has said he will bomb Oman if it “gets in the way” of US talks with Iran.
Oman, which says it is a neutral country between Iran and the US, has suffered a number of strikes from Iran since the conflict broke out. However, it is now playing a role in negotiations to reopen the strait. On Monday, Iranian officials said they were close to finalising a deal with Oman on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Jeremy Bowen, BBC international editor joins Adam to discuss Trump’s comments and ongoing negotiations between the US, Israel and Hamas on the implementation of the Gaza peace plan.
Plus, Joe Pike and Ben Chu join Adam to break down Reform UK’s pitch to ban foreign nationals from accessing most benefits as part of their proposed welfare reforms. They claim the plans would save £21bn a year by its fifth year, but the government says the policy would plunge the UK “back into years of Brexit re-negotiations”.

Trump threatens to bomb US ally Oman if it “gets in the way” of Iran negotiations | BBC News
President Donald Trump has threatened to bomb Oman – a US ally – if it “gets in the way” of his administration’s talks with Iran.
The US and Oman have been negotiating separately with Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that is vital to the global economy. It has been largely closed for nearly six months during the US-Iran war.
The US president made the threat to Oman while using an expletive during a phone interview.
Earlier in the day, Iranian officials said they were close to finalising a deal with Oman. Meanwhile, the future of talks between the US and Iran is unclear as a 60-day Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two sides is expiring.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump was asked by BBC News if he was seeking an extension to the MoU, to which he replied: “No.”
Since the US and Israel attacked Iran in February, Tehran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz – through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas usually passes.
Oman borders the southern side of the Strait and says it is a neutral country in this conflict. However it has suffered attacks strikes from Iran and is now playing a leading role in negotiating with Tehran to reopen the waterway.
Washington has pursued its own efforts to secure the reopening. Fox reporter Trey Yingst quoted Trump as saying: “If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the shit out of them.”
Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Sarah Smith and Jeremy Bowen.
