What do we know about the US’ nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia? | BBC News

Published

on

The US and Saudi Arabia have signed a landmark deal that will reportedly allow the Gulf kingdom to develop a civilian nuclear programme.

The deal is described as a “peaceful nuclear co-operation agreement” that will provide “great access for American companies in the Saudi nuclear energy program”, according to the US energy department.

Text from the deal was not made public, but US media have reported that it could allow Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium in the future – which can be used as fuel for power plants, but also to make nuclear bombs.

Experts say that would mark a first for the US and could run the risk of future nuclear proliferation in an already unstable region.

East Timor: ‘Stolen child’ reunites with family after 32 years – BBC News

Published

on

They became known as East Timor’s stolen generation – around 4,000 children taken from their families in the 1980s and 1990s during Indonesia’s brutal occupation. Some were conscripted into the Indonesian military; others taken by religious groups or state institutions. Indonesia calls them the “separated children” and denies they were taken by force.
Now a local NGO is taking them back to East Timor – now an independent nation – for the first time. The BBC followed Alberto Mohamed, now 43, as he returns to track down his family.

Botswana’s Elephant Hunting Dilemma – BBC News

Published

on

Hunting was banned under President Khama and Botswana was known for a zero-tolerance approach to poachers.

It was reported that in 2015 alone 30 Namibians, 22 Zimbabweans and an unknown number of Zambians were shot on suspicion of poaching.

Elephants can be very destructive when they encroach on to farmland and move though villages – destroying crops and sometimes killing people. Many rural communities believe the number of elephants is increasing, even though there is no evidence of this from scientific surveys.

But their “range” – how far the elephants travel – is expanding for a number of different reasons and that is increasing conflict between wildlife and humans. Many people believe this worsened after hunting was banned in 2013, and want it to be re-introduced.

The government has to balance lifting the hunting ban to win votes against the impact it may have on Botswana’s international reputation as a luxury safari destination.
