BREAKING: Keir Starmer apologises in the Commons over forced adoptions

Published

on

BREAKING: Sir Keir Starmer has called historical forced adoption a “stain on our history”, as he formally apologised on behalf of the British state.

In a statement to the Commons, the Prime Minister said he found it “hard to read” the testimonies of mothers, children and families affected, particularly as a father.

An estimated 185,000 babies were taken from their mothers in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.

Sir Keir said many young and vulnerable women were coerced, bullied or misled into believing they had no choice.

He said the practices were embedded across local authorities, voluntary and faith–based institutions.

An exiled MP has told GB News how Andy Burnham is “the only saviour” her former party have left – admitting that she could be tempted in returning to Labour under his leadership.

Rosie Duffield resigned the Labour whip in September 2024 after criticising Sir Keir Starmer’s “cruel and unnecessary policies.”

Speaking to Camilla Tominey, the Independent MP revealed she was a fan of Labour’s likely new leader, but she wanted clarity on his views on gender.

She said: “I think he does realise what the stakes are now for women, and I think he supports the Supreme Court ruling. But we’ll see. The jury’s out. I’m waiting to find out.”
