Donald Trump hits back at ‘unpatriotic’ vote after House rebukes him over Iran | BBC News

Published

on

US President Donald Trump has hit back at lawmakers who voted to send him a rebuke over the war in Iran, labelling the group “unpatriotic”.

On Wednesday, the US House of Representatives passed a measure that seeks to halt Trump from taking further military action.

In a post on Truth Social, the president wrote: “Yesterday, in a meaningless vote, the House voted, 4 bad Republicans and all of the Dumocrats, to limit my War Powers, right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Who would do such an unpatriotic thing.”

It is unclear how much legal force the House’s measure will have. The White House has dismissed its merits.

Sir Gareth Southgate on the challenges facing young men | BBC News

Published

on

Sir Gareth Southgate has said apprenticeships ‘have become a dirty word’ as he looks to tackle the issues facing young men when it comes to education and work.

Speaking to the Today programme about his new documentary, ‘Changing the Game for Young Men’, the former England men’s football manager said the issue is “complex” and pointed out that a lack of positive male role models can lead to boys looking elsewhere for guidance.

Sir Gareth also talked about the lack of vocational skills offered to those looking for less academic careers and said that a lot of young people are unable to gain the “work readiness” skills employers look for due to a decline in casual jobs.

The former footballer was also asked about England’s World Cup prospects, enthusing that he gets to “become an England fan again” after standing down as manager in 2024.

How El Niño could change the world | The Global Story

Published

on

A new phase of the natural El Niño weather pattern is “on our doorstep”, according to UN scientists, boosting temperatures on a planet already under strain from climate change.

The World Meteorological Organization said El Niño is “very likely” to officially begin within the next few months, driving more extreme weather around much of the globe.

Several forecasts from national weather agencies suggest this El Niño could end up as one of the strongest ever recorded, nicknamed by some as a possible “super” or even “Godzilla” event.

Yet El Niño is not just a climate story – throughout history, this recurring weather pattern has helped shape global events, triggering everything from famines and revolutions to impacting the Cold War.

In this episode, we speak to historian Peter Frankopan, Professor of Global History at Oxford, to discuss what historical El Niños tell us about what could be coming our way, and how we can collectively prepare.

Is Trump losing his grip on the Republican Party? | Americast

Could Democrats flip Iowa from the Republicans?

It’s a state Trump has won three times and Republicans have dominated for more than a decade. The last senate race the Democrats won there was Barack Obama’s victory in 2008, before he went on to win the presidential nomination. But now, overnight primary results from Iowa are leaving Democrats feeling optimistic.

Justin, Sarah and Anthony break down the key races, including a well-funded, gun-owning Democratic gubernatorial candidate who is appealing to voters across party lines, versus a Republican outsider who won without Trump’s endorsement. Does this signal an end to Trump’s winning streak when it comes to picking Republican candidates?

Democrats are also hoping to flip the senate, with a paralympian gold medallist who was backed by Chuck Schumer and the party establishment.

We analyse how important Iowa is for the Democrats to win, and for Republicans to keep hold of.
