‘Overwhelming consensus’ that screen time harms children, top UK doctors say | BBC News

Published

on

There is an “overwhelming consensus” that time spent on screens and social media harms children, the UK’s most senior doctors have said.

Responding to a government consultation about social media use for under-16s, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges said doctors should routinely ask younger patients about their screen time and social media use.

There is no consensus among the wider scientific community that screen time overall is harmful to children, but Academy Chair Jeanette Dickson said that like smoking or seatbelts before, the issue had become a “unifying force” for the profession.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has said new measures for under-16s will be brought in by the end of 2026.

The uncertainty keeps economies and markets volatile, pushing up prices around the world and straining international relations.

A conflict that US President Donald Trump said would last a few weeks has now lasted half a year, so where do we go from here and when might the war end?

Tiny Scottish town opens arms to Ukrainian refugees – BBC News

Published

It’s nearly eight weeks since Russia invaded Ukraine, forcing about four million people to flee their homes.

So far only 12,000 of them have reached the UK – and that’s partly down to delays in granting visas.

Residents in the town of Aberfeldy in Perthshire, Scotland, say they are making it their mission to welcome as many Ukrainians as possible.

Home Secretary Priti Patel has apologised for the “frustrating” visa delays which have prevented thousands of Ukrainian refugees entering the UK.
