Disabled people ‘stuck’ in hospital despite being fit to leave, BBC finds | BBC News
Disabled people have told the BBC they are being left in hospital for months after being declared medically fit to go home.
Ravi Mehta, 36, was admitted for a routine appointment in September 2025. He says he has been fit to leave since then, but remains in hospital eight months later after his NHS-funded home support ended. He says he has been pressured to accept a care home instead of returning to live with his family.
Lucinda Ritchie, 33, expected to go home after a long hospital stay, but was moved to a nursing home against her wishes. Within two days, her condition deteriorated and she was readmitted, where she remains.
Both cases centre on disputes with local NHS integrated care boards over support outside hospital. Campaigners say some disabled people risk being pushed towards more restrictive care as budgets come under pressure. The NHS says decisions are based on patient safety and needs, and denies they are driven by cost.
The BBC has seen documents relating to both cases.

Donald Trump vows to recover Iran’s uranium | BBC News
Tehran and Washington have demonstrated how central Iran’s nuclear issue is to both the war and any future peace between them.
US President Donald Trump vowed Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium will be recovered, while reports emerged that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei issued a directive that his country’s uranium should not be sent abroad.
Meanwhile, Pakistan is continuing its efforts at shuttle diplomacy and a warning from the International Energy Agency states oil markets are heading for a ‘red zone’.

Energy bills to rise for millions as impact of Iran war hits | BBC News
Household energy prices in England, Scotland and Wales will rise by 13% a year in July, as soaring wholesale costs caused by the US-Israel war with Iran hit bills for the first time.
Regulator Ofgem says the war means a household using a typical amount of gas and electricity will pay £221 more a year, with an annual bill of £1,862.
The cap affects millions of homes on variable tariffs and suppliers are warning it could go even higher in the colder winter months without an end to the conflict.
Energy costs have rocketed since Iran responded to US and Israeli attacks by effectively blocking the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping route – a fifth of the world’s oil and gas usually flows through the waterway.
