Iran will be ‘blown off the face of the Earth’ if it attacks US vessels, says Trump | BBC News

Published

on

The US “should be wary of being dragged back into a quagmire”, the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned, as US President Donald Trump’s plan to free ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz threatens the US-Iran ceasefire.

Trump said in an interview with Fox News on Monday that Iran would be “blown off the face of the Earth” if the country attacks US vessels during “Project Freedom”.

But Iran insists that it controls the strait and on Monday fired missiles and drones at military and commercial ships, according to the US.

South Korea and the UAE reported damage to commercial ships, while a reported Iranian attack caused a fire at a UAE oil depot.

Around 2,000 ships are estimated to be stuck in the Strait of Hormuz.

Powerful back-to-back earthquakes strike Venezuela | BBC News

Published

on

Two major earthquakes shook the Venezuelan capital of Caracas seconds apart on Wednesday evening.

The first 7.2-magnitude quake was centred in the state of Carabobo, some 20km from the capital, Caracas.

It was followed by a stronger earthquake just 39 seconds later, with that one registering a 7.5 magnitude, the US Geological Survey says.

Buildings have collapsed as residents poured out into the streets, and the interior minister has asked people to leave their homes.

It is still unclear how many casualties there have been and what the extent of the damage will be.
