New reports reveal that the UK has spent £6.5 million on a scheme offering financial incentives to encourage certain foreign national offenders to leave Britain. The programme has reignited fierce debate over immigration policy, public spending, and whether taxpayer money should be used in this way.

Former Cabinet Office Chief Economist Jonathan Portes argues the controversy is overblown, describing it as “a bit of a non-story” and suggesting that, if anything, the voluntary returns programme should be expanded. He explains why he believes the scheme can save money overall and reduce the costs associated with detention, legal proceedings, and deportation.

Research Director at the Centre for Migration Control, Rob Bates, strongly disagrees, branding the payments “morally repugnant” and arguing that foreign criminals should be removed from the UK without receiving financial incentives funded by taxpayers.

Reform UK vow to end illegal working

Published

Reform UK has branded illegal working a “slap in the face” to Britons as the party promises a series of measures to “reclaim our high streets”.

Setting out the major pledge, Home Affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf vowed a Reform Government would pass a “Deliveroo Law”, making CEOs and directors of large companies benefiting from illegal working.

He said: “Under a Reform Government, Britain will have the harshest penalties in the world for those employing illegal migrants.

“Bosses of companies employing illegal migrants will be sent to prison, and their companies fined 10 per cent of their global revenues.

“There are companies whose entire model is based on profiting from illegal working.

“It is a slap in the face to the public. It makes a mockery of our immigration laws, takes jobs from British workers and is funding the people smugglers in the Channel.

“Young British people are being shut out of entry level jobs and our whole economy is being undermined. We will introduce the toughest penalties anywhere in the world for illegal working.”
