Is Trump about to attack Iran again? | Global News Podcast
The US-Israel war on Iran is on hold – for the moment – but although a ceasefire has been in place since early April, diplomatic talks in Pakistan have not produced a permanent peace deal. Now Iranian state media says Tehran has put forward a new proposal for negotiations, but President Trump has said he’s not satisfied with it.
The US is continuing to exert economic pressure on Iran with its blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz. But there are growing reports that President Trump is considering possible new strikes on Iran – as the deadline passes for Congressional approval for further military action. According to US law, the President must ask lawmakers for permission for any military action longer than 60 days.
There are reports that President Trump has been briefed about possible options for another offensive, while Bloomberg mentions the potential deployment of a new hypersonic missile called Dark Eagle.
We ask our diplomatic correspondent Paul Adams what US military action might look like, and which side is under more pressure to make a deal.

Trump says US will free ships stranded in strait of Hormuz | BBC News
President Trump has said the US is to help free up ships out of the Persian Gulf, through the strait of Hormuz. It’s understood that the plan is for US warships to escort commercial shipping through the strait.
The US has been carrying out a naval blockade of the strait of Hormuz following the ceasefire in its war with Iran. The Iranians has closed the strait with attacks on shipping. The sea lane is critical to international trade because around a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas supplies pass through it.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: âThis process, Project Freedom, will begin Monday morning, Middle East time. I am fully aware that my representatives are having very positive discussions with the country of Iran, and that these discussions could lead to something very positive for all.â
He described the planned operation as a âhumanitarian processâ to help the crews of ships stuck in the Gulf by Iranâs closure of the strait and a US naval blockade.
Trump said that âIf, in any way, this process is interfered with, that interference will, unfortunately, have to be dealt with forcefully.â
Earlier, President Trump said he had reviewed and rejected Iranâs latest peace proposal, saying it was ânot acceptableâ.
Human rights groups inside Iran have accused the regime of carrying out widespread torture and execution. The BBC has been able to speak to some of those inside Iran.
