Not far from a small market town on the Hudson lies a quiet valley called Sleepy Hollow — a drowsy, dreamy place where the people are given to strange beliefs, trances and visions, and where the whole neighborhood abounds with local tales, haunted spots and twilight superstitions. Genghis Khan Died 150 Years Earlier — And Still Decided Who Could Rule Asia

Published

on

Genghis Khan died in 1227. A hundred and fifty years later, his name still decided who was allowed to rule Asia — and the most powerful man alive was not on the list. In 1393, in the city of Baghdad, a mint struck a silver coin for Timur. It carried three things. A date, a mint, and a name. The name was not his. He would go on to take Delhi, sack Damascus, and capture an Ottoman sultan on the field at Ankara, and the silver leaving his mints would still carry another man’s name. Timurid court chronicles do trace his father’s line back to Tumbinai. No written evidence from Timur’s own lifetime, or from any time before it, makes that link directly. That is the most contested thing in this story, and the coin is the one document in it that no court historian could edit.

Every factual claim in this video is sourced. Where the sources disagree, the video says so instead of picking the tidier version. Where something is a reconstruction rather than a record, it is named as one.
