Rachel Reeves has been accused of making the British economy “far more vulnerable” with “gross mismanagement” amid global insecurity, Shadow Chancellor Sir Mel Stride has said.
The Chancellor was challenged on her handling of the current situation while updating the Commons on her response to the conflict between the US and its allies with Iran.
Sir Mel began: “It is clear that these are very serious and concerning times, and the developments in the Middle East are already having profound consequences for our corporate dollars per barrel.”
“For the first time since the 2022 energy crisis, that alone is enough to have huge knock-on effects for households and businesses.”
Taking aim at the Chancellor, he said: “Her approach to the economy in the run-up to this crisis, her gross mismanagement, has left us far more vulnerable than would otherwise have been the case.”
“The government, of course, is continuing to impose ruinously high taxes on our oil and gas sector and choosing to rely on imports instead of maximising our own domestic energy supply.
“That is proving to be an incredibly short-sighted approach, but as the right hon lady has just told us, there will be no change in direction; that is the wrong choice.”
The Chancellor has promised measures including a £15billion warm homes plan, a £420million buisiness electricty discount and a £5 per litre fuel duty cut.

Labour SPLIT over employers aren’t ‘working people’ definition to avoid breaking tax-hike claims
Treasury Minister has sparked widespread outrage after claiming that employers are “not working people”.
Appearing on GB News this morning, Emma Reynolds told host Camilla Tominey that they are “companies” instead.
Pressing Ms Reynolds on Labour’s Budget statement on Wednesday, which raised income tax on rents and interests, Camilla questioned whether the manifesto has been “broken”.

Meghan’s father branded ‘possible sex offender of the grossest kind’ by Philippine minister
The Philippines’ interior minister Jonvic Remulla has claimed Thomas Markle Senior appears to be a “possible sex offender of the grossest kind.”
Mr Remulla said forensic investigators are expected to complete their work within seven days, at which point a formal statement will be issued.
Thomas Markle Snr. has acknowledged paying for sex in the Southeast Asian nation but categorically denies possessing any child sexual abuse material and engaging in sexual activity with anyone under 18.
The discovery that prompted the investigation came from Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr, who told The Sun on Friday that he had uncovered child sex abuse images at their father’s former Philippine residence. He subsequently filed reports with both Philippine authorities and the FBI.
The Duchess of Sussex wrote what was described as a final letter to her father during his recovery from a leg amputation last year, GB News understands.
Thomas Sr., 82, has also been strongly defended by Meghan’s half-sister Samantha, who says the claims are false and form part of a “vendetta” Thomas Jr. has against their father.
