Lord Mandelson says Jeffrey Epstein friendship was ‘a terrible mistake’ | BBC News
Lord Mandelson has said he never saw girls at Jeffrey Epstein’s properties, and declined to apologise to the late paedophile’s victims for maintaining his friendship with the American because he was not “knowledgeable of what he was doing”.
Speaking to the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg in his first interview since being sacked as the UK’s ambassador to the US over his links to Epstein, he told us that he thought he had been “kept separate” from the sexual side of the late financier’s life because he was gay.
He was fired after emails emerged showing supportive messages he had sent to Epstein after the American was convicted for soliciting prostitution from a minor.
The former ambassador said the only people he had seen at Epstein’s properties were “middle-aged housekeepers”.
He said he would have apologised were he “in any way complicit or culpable” but stressed that was never the case.

A military parade has marched through the streets of Paris below clouds of red, white and blue smoke left by planes in the sky as part of Bastille Day celebrations.
Held each year on 14 July, the national holiday marks the storming of the Bastille fortress in 1789, a key event from the French Revolution.
President Emmanuel Macron was joined by European leaders, including the UK’s Sir Keir Starmer and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, as soldiers from Ukraine and its ‘Coalition of the Willing’ allies passed by.
The BBC’s James Waterhouse reports on the day’s celebrations.

Counter terrorism police are now leading the investigation into the death of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe, after “new information and evidence has come to light”, Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) has said.
“The police are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. I will be updating the House further this afternoon,” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said.
A 28-year-old white British man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was originally arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday but has now been re-arrested “on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism”, CTPSE said.
Police said the “dynamic and complex investigation” had led to the new arrest.
On Thursday, 78-year-old Widdecombe was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, having sustained serious injuries.

Three members of his government, including Home Office minister Jess Phillips, have resigned, whilst scores of Labour MPs are calling for him to quit following a disastrous set of elections for the party last week.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among a number of cabinet ministers urging the prime minister to set out a departure timetable.
Sir Keir said he does not intend to quit and threw down the gauntlet to potential rivals to formally challenge him as Labour leader.
No MP has yet launched a formal bid to challenge him, which requires the backing of 81 colleagues or 20% of Labour MPs, according to party rules.
