Delhi Lakshmi Yojana promises ₹2,500 every month to eligible women, but as applications and verification move ahead, questions are emerging on who qualifies, what documents are needed and how the registration process actually works.

The Delhi government has allocated ₹5,110 crore for the scheme in its 2026-27 Budget and expects more than 17 lakh women to benefit. The scheme is meant for women aged 21–60 from families with annual income of up to ₹2.5 lakh. It was earlier known as the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana before being renamed Delhi Lakshmi Yojana.

The eligibility rules include a 10-year Delhi residency requirement, family-income limits and a provision that only one eligible woman per family can receive the benefit, with the eldest eligible woman selected where multiple women qualify. There are also several exclusion criteria, including certain government beneficiaries, four-wheeler-owning families and other specified conditions.

The rollout is now entering a crucial phase. Reports say around 8 lakh women have registered, while sanction letters are expected to begin from August 26/27 and monthly payments are scheduled to start from September 1.

Meanwhile, a fresh controversy has emerged over an MP/MLA endorsement requirement. The Delhi High Court has questioned why political representatives should have a role in determining eligibility for a government welfare scheme.
