Angela Rayner resigns from UK government over tax row | BBC News

Published

on

Angela Rayner has resigned as the UK’s deputy prime minister, housing secretary and deputy leader of the Labour Party over failing to pay enough tax on a flat in Hove, East Sussex.

Rayner referred herself to the PM’s ethics adviser earlier this week, after admitting underpaying stamp duty on her £800,000 flat.

An ethics report found she breached the ministerial code and “did not heed the caution” in legal advice she received. In her resignation letter, she said she takes “full responsibility” for the “error”.

Netanyahu orders closure of entire occupied West Bank after shooting | BBC News

Published

on

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the closure of the entire occupied West Bank and the cancellation of his party’s political events after a shooting.

Five Israelis were wounded and two suspected Palestinian attackers killed by Israeli security forces after a shooting near the city of Hebron, Israeli officials say.

The attack comes at a time of high tensions in the West Bank, with extremist Jewish settlers targeting Palestinians during the annual olive harvest, and Israel’s general election taking place in four days time.

The West Bank was already expected to be placed under lockdown for the election on Monday and Tuesday, according to Israeli media.

Ukraine disputes Trump claim Musk reversed Starlink restrictions | BBC News

Published

on

Ukraine is still recording issues with the Starlink network, sources within the defence ministry say, after Donald Trump said limits on the satellite uplink had been reversed by Elon Musk.

The sources told the BBC that instances of drones experiencing connection loss at speeds of 161km/h (100mph) were being recorded, hampering military operations.

The US president had denied instructing the tech billionaire to restrict connectivity to Starlink’s military-grade counterpart, Starshield, before saying on Thursday that Musk had “put it back”.

Musk previously said he was not behind the slowdown, which affected Ukraine’s ability to use attack drones and co-ordinate defensive operations.

Attack ad with candidate’s estranged mother sparks backlash | BBC News

Published

on

Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign released an ad earlier this week featuring his opponent Amy Acton’s estranged mother.

In the clip, she urges people in the state of Ohio not to vote for her daughter, saying she has “lied her entire life”.

Acton’s past is well documented. She and her brother were removed from their mother’s custody as children, which Acton says occurred after her stepfather sexually assaulted her at the age of 12.

Acton’s brother is among those who have condemned the ad, saying turning alleged sexual assault into “a political talking point” was a “despicable low”.

Ramaswamy confirmed on Tuesday that the ad came from his campaign, and he later pledged to spend $4m (£2.9m) to further air it.

Why are we seeing more death on our feeds?

From footage of an Ecuadorean priest being killed by a crucifix, to the man who was attacked by a tiger on camera, snuff content appears to be making a comeback.

On this episode, Marianna and Matt examine how various platforms’ responses to so-called trauma porn have evolved since an initial tightening of restrictions following the livestreamed Christchurch shootings in 2019.
