Opposition mounts in France ahead of Bayeux Tapestry move to UK | BBC News
The Bayeux Tapestry, which documents the Norman invasion of England in 1066, will be closed to the public in France from Monday as opposition mounts ahead of its move to London.
The next time it will be possible to see the nearly 1,000-year-old work of art should be when it goes on display at the British Museum in September next year.
However, the French art world is fiercely opposed to the project, with experts fearing the 70m-long (230ft) masterpiece is in far too delicate a state to be transported across the English Channel.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the loan when they met in London in July.

Why have hundreds of prisoners been released in England and Wales? | BBC News
Hundreds of prisoners across England and Wales were to be released on 1 October under a new scheme by the UK government.
And it’s just the start of the scheme, which is set to see thousands of prisoners released over several months.
Offenders serving sentences of up to 19 months are now eligible for release after a third of their term.
While the government says the scheme is designed to free up prison space, victims have questioned how they will be protected.

Why has UK diesel price hit an all time high? | BBC News
The average price of diesel has risen above £2 a litre in the UK for the first time, according to the RAC motoring group, with petrol also soaring to 174.71p a litre on average.
Price rises were “showing no signs of slowing, heaping more misery onto motorists,” the group said.
Separately on Friday, the G7 nations agreed to release 100 million barrels of oil to head off further increases.
