For a hundred years, the kings of France kept their treasury in the Paris fortress of the Knights Templar. Then, at dawn on Friday 13 October 1307, a king deep in debt had them arrested across France in a single morning. This is the entire story of the Knights Templar, the bankers of the Crusades, from a handful of knights guarding the pilgrim road to a fire on an island in the Seine, told in order in 2 h 44 min.

Subscribe if you would rather have the whole story than a ten-minute version: Hindsight Report makes complete histories of money, crime and power.

How a brotherhood sworn to own nothing came to hold a fortune across two continents: the Council of Troyes and Bernard of Clairvaux; the estates, the commanderies and the ships that moved money east; the Second Crusade and the king who ran out of money; Hattin and the fall of Jerusalem; the Paris and London Temples as royal treasuries; Louis IX’s ransom on the Nile; the fall of Acre in 1291; Philip IV and the arrests of 1307; the confessions, the defenders and the Chinon parchment, misfiled in the Vatican archives and found in 2001; the Council of Vienne and the end of the order in 1312; the burning of Jacques de Molay in March 1314; where the Templars’ money actually went; and the myths of treasure, Baphomet and the Grail, set against the documents. Contested figures and dates are given as the sources give them, and the historian is named.

“Queen of the Internet” and “Tech Nostradamus” Mary Meeker highlighted video games in her recent internet trends report. Here’s a few of the highlights.

Dre Greenlaw got his revenge game against Sean Payton, and it was personal. After the game, he told Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle about the hard feelings from getting cut after signing a big contract. He said Payton didn’t tell him in person, and he found out through his agent. The hosts break down the confrontation, from Greenlaw pointing and yelling at Payton to Fred Warner stepping in at the end of the game to move him away. From there, the hosts get into the rest of the 49ers’ win. They debate whether Bo Nix is really a franchise quarterback, compare the Broncos’ check-down heavy offense to what Brock Purdy is doing, and take a caller’s idea of trading the whole draft for a Super Bowl run. They also react to George Kittle’s comeback from the Achilles injury, Mike Evans’ efficient game, and the huge Seahawks matchup on deck.

Topics discussed include:
Greenlaw’s post-game comments on how Sean Payton cut him
The on-field confrontation and Fred Warner stepping in
Why Payton keeps rubbing players, coaches, and executives the wrong way
The Bo Nix debate: franchise QB or just big, strong, and mobile?
Would you trade a whole draft for one more Super Bowl shot?
George Kittle’s return and Mike Evans’ Hall of Fame résumé
Why the Seahawks game could be a huge swing in the division

Was Greenlaw right to get in Payton’s face, or should he have just let his play do the talking? Tell us in the comments.
