In 1543, a storm-battered junk carrying a few Portuguese traders drifted to Tanegashima, a small island south of Japan. The island’s 15-year-old lord watched them fire their strange iron sticks, bought both guns, and told his swordsmith to make more. Within a generation, guns were deciding Japan’s biggest battles.

So where does the sword-worshipping samurai who scorns guns come from? This is the story of how samurai really fought, how Japan fell for guns, sponge cake, bread and playing cards from the “southern barbarians”, why Japan never really gave up the gun, and how the romantic samurai code was written by men who never fought, explained to the West in a book written in English, and finished off by Hollywood.

A note on the evidence
Nobody counted Japan’s guns: the famous “300,000 guns” goes back to a 16th-century adventurer’s hearsay. The story of the smith’s daughter Wakasa is a family legend, the gunfire that “made” Kobayakawa switch sides at Sekigahara is probably a later addition, and Saigo’s widow’s reaction to his statue is a family anecdote. Where the video tells a story like these, it says so.

The Fall of Constantinople in 1453 marked the final hours of a dying empire. Witness the end of the Roman legacy in the East.

The video details the final hours of the Byzantine Empire before its collapse. We move from the somber religious ceremonies inside the grand churches to the terrifying reality of cannons being readied outside the city walls. It is a slow, methodical look at the pressure building against the last Roman inhabitants as they face an inevitable end.

This is a narrative of the siege itself, covering the storming of the fortifications and the collapse of defenses that had stood for centuries. It captures the tension of the soldiers and the atmosphere of a civilization bracing for its final moments in 1453. If you appreciate detailed medieval history told as a single, uninterrupted story, this is built for you.
