Putin tells WW2 Victory Day ceremony “the whole of Russia” supports Ukraine invasion | BBC News

Published

Russia has held a military parade in Moscow to mark the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War Two.

Addressing the event, President Vladirmir Putin sought to link the war and its defence of Russia to the conflict with Ukraine.

Despite western efforts to isolate Russia since its invasion of its neighbour, more than 20 world leaders attended the parade, including the presidents of China and Brazil and the prime minister of one European Union country, Slovakia.

Ukraine’s President Zelensky called the event a “parade of cynicism”.

Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting from Steve Rosenberg in Moscow.

How efforts to control Ebola outbreak are being stepped up in DR Congo | BBC News

Published

The Ministry of health in the Democratic Republic of Congo says more than a 1,000 people are now confirmed to have contracted Ebola and nearly 250 of them have died in the east of the country.

Efforts to control the outbreak are being stepped up in the vast region beset by decades of insecurity. The three provinces affected by the outbreak – Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu – host three and a half million people displaced by conflict. Some of the camps have already recorded suspected Ebola deaths.

The BBC’s Anne Soy travelled to the epicentre and now reports on the measures people are taking in as infection continues to spread.

US and Iran peace plan full details – end to hostilities “on all fronts” | BBC News

Published

on

The US- Iran peace plan has been made public – with both sides agreeing to end all hostilities.

14 point memorandum includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, apparently with no tolls.

The US has agreed to lift sanctions on Iran and to unfreeze Iranian assets held abroad.

A $300 billion reconstruction plan for Iran is proposed although it’s unclear who would pay for it.

And Iran agrees not to develop nuclear weapons, with both countries working together to remove any enriched material.

The deal makes no mention of Iranian ballistic capabilities, or its support for foreign groups such as Hezbollah.

President Trump said he hoped the deal would be signed tomorrow and has also said: Trump: “we’re going to bomb the hell out of them if they violate the agreement”.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by James Waterhouse, Gary O’Donoghue and Lucy Williamson.

Has anyone won the Iran war? | The Global Story

Published

on

Donald Trump says a deal to end the war with Iran has already been signed and details will be released “pretty soon”.

This comes ahead of a formal signing ceremony in Switzerland on Friday.

Speaking during a G7 meeting in France, the US President said as part of the US’s deal to end the war, Iran will “never have a nuclear weapon”.

But the agreement remains shrouded in mystery, and major questions remain about whether both sides can reach a long-term peace deal.

Asma Khalid and Tristan Redman from The Global Story podcast speak to the BBC’s chief international correspondent, Lyse Doucet.

They ask: how has the war affected the global economy, how people in Iran have been affected, what Iran’s nuclear capabilities are and what has happened to the Iranian regime.

What it’s like inside the Enhanced Games | BBC News

Published

This is inside the Enhanced Games – the competition some have dubbed the “Steroid Olympics”.

The inaugural games featured dozens of elite athletes using performance-enhancing drugs to try and break world records in track, weightlifting and swimming.

The drugs they use must be legal, and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

But substances like testosterone and human growth hormone – banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency – are not only celebrated, they’re encouraged and for sale.
