Tensions rise between India and Pakistan | BBC News

Published

on

The UN has called on India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint as each side threatens the other in the wake of Tuesday’s attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Indian police have named three of four suspected gunmen behind the attack that killed 26 tourists, saying two are Pakistani citizens and a third is a local Kashmiri man.

Pakistan denies Indian claims that it played a role in the shooting.

Tuesday’s attack saw a group of gunmen fire on tourists near Pahalgam, a resort in the disputed Himalayan region.

Delhi has since suspended a water-sharing treaty with Pakistan and they closed the main land border between the two countries.

How the Democrats’ historic night of wins unfolded | BBC News

Published

on

The Democrats have won a blowout victory in the US midterm elections, winning the Senate and the House of Representatives, taking control of Congress for the rest of Donald Trump’s presidency.

In the Senate race, Republican strongholds have been toppled by the Democrats in Texas, Ohio and Kansas, which last elected a Democrat almost 100 years ago.

Trump has congratulated the Democrats on a “good job” and acknowledged that gas prices hurt Republicans during the midterm races, saying people “didn’t like it” when they had to pay more for fuel.

The midterm elections happen mid-way through every 4-year presidential election cycle, giving Americans the chance to elect members of Congress, which is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Here is how the night unfolded.

Would you let AI walk around your home?

Meta has reportedly built a humanoid robot called Max and, if Mark Zuckerberg gets his way, this could be the next frontier for artificial intelligence. After years of AI living on our screens, Silicon Valley is now racing to give AI a body, one that can see, hear, move through the world and interact with people in real life.

This week on AI Decoded, we explore the growing race to put humanoid robots into our homes and workplaces. Joining us are John Hanke, founder of Niantic and CEO of Niantic Spatial, Ed Zitron, one of the technology industry’s most outspoken critics, and technology researcher and author Stephanie Hare.

Together, they unpack the technical challenges, commercial ambitions and ethical questions behind the push to bring AI into the physical world.

US tech stocks rally after dramatic plunge but markets remain shaky | BBC News

Published

on

US tech stocks have shown signs of a partial recovery after the value of shares in artificial intelligence and technology firms plummeted worldwide.

The drop off came after the Democrats’ resounding win in the US midterms, which sparked fears of a reduction in AI development.

On Thursday the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index closed down by more than 5.5%, losing an estimated $2.5tn in market value, according to Dow Jones data.

Businesses closely linked to artificial intelligence development, particularly makers of key computer chips and semiconductors, took the hammering.

Share prices in US markets have edged up on Friday. Chipmaker Nvidia’s share price jumped by over 7% and Elon Musk’s SpaceX was up 6.19% – though both are yet to recover their heavy losses from yesterday. It’s a similar story for chipmakers AMD and Micron.
